District Spring Meeting Arrangements in Lordsburg Hosts

Arrangements for the 7th District Conference of The American Legion to be held in Lordsburg on Saturday and Sunday May 1 90 have been completed. Robert Swan Post No hosts a joint Legion and Auxiliary meeting at 10 o clock Saturday morning at the Legion Hall. Delegates and alternates are named for both posts and auxiliary, with speakers on Legion and Auxiliary programs.

West Side junior wins local spelling contest

Yanis Robertson, 12, seventh grade at Lords Junior High, won the local spelling contest. She will represent Ty Municipal Schools at the El Paso Herald-Post Spell in Paso on May 6 and 7. Thirteen students competed. 60 words per test, across three tests for a total of 180 words. First place, Robertson. second place Susan, eighth grade. third place Diana, sixth grade.

Cancer Crusade Aims Public Drive To Fight Cancer

County chair Mrs Sam Johns leads a Cancer Crusade campaign to April 21 with many volunteers distributing literature on cancer research and support. The drive seeks to help ten people affected by cancer and urges community help in conquering the disease.

Justice Moise Speaks to Lions on Court Delays and Roles

New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Irwin S Moise addressed the Lions Club in El Charro. He outlined court procedures from district to supreme court and noted the average 24 month path for cases, versus about three months in the high court, comparing favorably with national times. He warned that delaying justice harms justice.

Mavericks Take Second in Triangular Track Meet at Silver City

The Mavericks finished second overall in a triangular track meet at Silver City Western last Saturday. The freshmen also placed second in their division, with five firsts and six seconds for the Mavericks. David Estrada won the 100 yard dash and javelin, with a third in the broad jump, while Arthur Estrada won shot put and was second in discus. Gilbert Frausto and Frank Martinez went 1st and 2nd in the mile, time 5:10.8, adding eight points. the team also scored five in the mile relay and placed second in 440 yard relays and third in 80 yard relays. Ed Mesa, John Mann, Polie Jiminez, and Wayne Smith posted seconds and thirds in various events including 880 yard run, pole vault, and hurdles.

New Mexico District I Women’s Extension Club Meeting Held

Hidalgo County hosted the District I meeting of the New Mexico Extension Clubs on April 7 at the American Legion Hall Lordsburg. Leaders including Mrs. Sam Johns Virden chaired the Hidalgo group with committee members from Rodeo and others. Mayor Alan A. Koff welcomed attendees and Joyce Wilson and L. M. Hatch led music for about 121 members and guests at luncheon.

State County Officers Raid Truck Stop

State and county officers raided the 80 Truck Stop east of town on Highway 80 at about 8 p.m. Saturday. Six women were arrested on prostitution and vagrancy charges, arraigned and held on $1,000 bonds, with hearings pending. One more woman, Louis Miller, was arrested Sunday and posted $1,000 bond. A warrant for Dorothy Ann Smith was issued but not served. she is reported hospitalized in Arizona. The suspects are housed in three jails. Additional officers and Sheriff Pace noted complaints from carriers about delays causing perishable loads to stall in Lordsburg.

Boys and Girls State Delegates Elected

Delegates to Boys and Girls State were elected Wednesday morning at the high school. The Girls State delegates are Yolanda Renteria and Sally Baker with Mary Edith Hart and Judy McAlister as alternates. Boys State delegates are Fostine Gonzales Wayne Smith Eldon Gilligan with alternates Jimmie Parsons Chad Richardson and Eddie Hitson.
