Lordsburg Bypass Project Advances Amid Rights‑Of‑Way Hurdles

Federal and state highway officials move ahead with the Lordsburg bypass and the I 40 corridor reconstruction. Attorney Sheldon says right‑of‑way clearances and settlements may take 60 to 90 days, with bids possible into 1969 if plans finalize. The project, designed by T T Burnett, ties to the US 70 80 rebuild and the Public Roads Office notes costs rise until land is cleared.

Mavericks Compete At Western Relays Sets Relay Records

Mavericks placed in nine events at Silver City Western Relays led by Chad Richardson who won shot put with 49-542 setting a Western Relay record. Art Talavera set a school board jump mark 20 6 1 8 and Magdaleno Guzman posted a 11 42 9 two mile. Lordsburg, Bowie of El Paso, Silver City, Cobre, Deming and Mayfield scored. Next Saturday the Mavericks travel to Truth or Consequences for the Tiger Relays.

Truckload Of Dressed Hoes Overturns On Highway East Of Here

A large semi trailer carrying refrigerated dressed hog halves overturned 12 miles east of Lordsburg after a westbound tire blew out. The trailer spilled cargo on the roadway and authorities investigated a reported pork cargo shortage, noting federal penalties for interstate theft.

Martin Leyva Elected VFW Commander in 1967-68

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3099 elected officers for 1967 68 led by Martin Leyva as commander and Felix Jimenez as senior vice commander. Al Ward and George Bridgeford named vice commanders, Gene Noce trustee, James H Kinkema quartermaster. Installation set for April 27 at 8 p m at La Fiesta with Past Commander Ernesto V Renteria officiating and District No 4 Commander Noling attending.

Corporal J. D. Smith Returns From Vietnam

Cpl J D Smith arrived in Seattle on April 10 after a year in Vietnam. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J W Smith of Lordsburg. He is home on a 30 day leave and will be assigned to the 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood Texas.

Nominations Open to Select Sun Princess

The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce invites nominations to choose a Sun Carnival Princess for the 33rd Southwestern Sun Carnival in El Paso from December 26 to 31. Candidate must be 18 or a high school graduate, unmarried, dignified and self assured. maximum age 2? is unclear.

Mrs. Robert L. Davidow formerly Miriam Lehman receives a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in the Biology Department at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She will complete her master's degree in January and contributes to the university through instructional work. She is UC Berkeley trained and a 1962 Lordsburg High School graduate, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lehman.

Grand Chief Visits Local Pythian Sisters in New Mexico

Grand Chief Mrs. Oney Dow tours New Mexico visiting Lordsburg and Deming temples. A reception at Range Restaurant entertained about 25 members, followed by a Knights of Pythias meeting where Burke Btiles was initiated into the Order of Pythian Sisters. Mourning was draped for 30 days due to the death of Past Supreme Chief fiyed Sanchin of Ardmore Oklahoma.

Western Auto Store Opens in Lordsburg with Robertson

Dudley R. Robertson announces the opening of his Western Auto Store at 104 East Raeilica Avenue in Lordsburg replacing Lehman’s. The store offers appliances tires batteries and various merchandise as part of a 5000-store alliance. Robertson, a resident for 32 years, invites the public to the grand opening next Thursday.

Jaycee Installation Honors Local Leaders at Americana Banquet

Mel Phillips was installed as president of the Las Cruces Jaycees with Art Altuna Sr external VP Miller Ornelas internal VP Bob Cratty secretary and Cesar Flores treasurer. Past president Jim Culberson presented an ice bag for headaches and received a Jaycee of the Year award along with a past president pen and plaque. Presidential honors went to Lee O'Donnell Cesar Flores and Will Diener for service and organizational work. Guest speakers included Bob Cratty Will Diener Fred Werner Oscar Syffert and spouse from Las Cruces. A hearty meal followed.

Miss Hitson Installed as New Mexico FHA President

At the 71st birthday celebration of the Future Homemakers of America in Albuquerque on April 7 Shirley Hitson was installed state president with Debbie Kirby as state and national projects vice president. Gloria Noce was named delegate to the national meeting in San Francisco, where Shirley and Debbie will attend as state officers. Shirley was announced as the New Mexico candidate for National Recreation Leader.
