Hidalgo County Commissioners Extend Contracts and Approve Budgets

Hidalgo County Commissioners met Tuesday and extended Dr. O Connel's contract under prior terms, signed the Aerostate contract, and approved a three year extension for the Bar VS landfill deal. They adopted the Solid Waste Ordinance and Solid Waste Resolution, signed the Justice Grant Resolution, and agreed to bid on body armor if funded. Bid approvals covered a 6 foot chain link fence for Animas yard and the annual audit for the 79th year. A public presentation by Richard Martinez explained property tax responsibilities including Central Assessment Bureau duties and new mobile home depreciation rules. Public information efforts will be increased with a new travel voucher form and a hold harmless agreement for the Bike A Thon. The District Attorney's remodeling request will be reviewed at 1991-92 budget hearings. Sheriff Hall seeks jailer hiring under a federal contract and certification for jailers. judge Saucedo requests storm windows for the District Court, to be discussed at budget hearings. Signs for the landfill and transfer sites will be produced for taxpaying residents.

Landsail Races Set For Weekend Near Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Optimist Club hosts Landsail Races at the dry lake bed west of Lordsburg near the Gary overpass exit. Six courses, prizes for top three and best design, and $20 entry per landsailer. Also a Kids Bicycle Rodeo, a Horseshoe Tournament, and a Kite Flying Contest with vendors, bonfire, and free spectator access. State To Begin Work On Playas Road May 7

Hidalgo County confirms Playas Road work will start May 7 per county manager Tommy Anderson. State crews will connect the initial five miles to the new 10 mile stretch and take over maintenance of the road in exchange for keeping State Road 338.

The Lordsburg Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday April 15 at 7 00 PM in the Central Administrative Office. The work session will cover the development of the 1991 92 school year budget and review proposals for a fiscal and compliance audit for 1990 91.

PFC Mandy Gomez arrives in Lordsburg after seven months in Saudi Arabia with the Gulf War. She drove trucks delivering water and supplies, endured cold showers and routine scud warnings, and values service and support from home. After a two week furlough, she heads back to Ft. Benning with one year left and hints at reenlisting.

Parade Preparations To Honor Desert Storm Troops

Hidalgo County to host a Saturday parade on April 20 starting at 10:00 AM from the National Guard Armory and ending at Lordsburg High School Football Field with ceremonies led by the Chamber of Commerce City of Lordsburg and Hidalgo County officials. Lions Club flags will be displayed and returned. A Monday meeting at 6 00 PM at the Civic Center invites all service family members and parade participants to finalize plans.

Council Questioned About Street Paving

North Street paving funds and spending were questioned at the City Council meeting. Molly Orona cited a $365000 balance since 1989 and a $100000 outlay for attorneys. Councilman Morelos reported $7700 spent on surveying. North Street remains on the priority list. engineers Inc. prepared blueprints and sought state matching funds. Mayor Daiz noted frequent calls about potholes and street repairs.

Services Held For Antonio M. Alvarez

Antonio M. Alvarez, 65, longtime Lordsburg resident, died Tuesday in Tucson. Visitation Friday 5 to 7 pm at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel, vigil 7 pm. Funeral liturgy Saturday 10 am at St. Joseph's Church, interment Shakespeare Cemetery. Born June 13, 1925 in Gary, a Navy veteran and carpenter. Survivors include wife Evangelina, four sons, five daughters, a brother and two sisters, 27 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed. arrangements by Baca's Heather.
