Easter Seal Society Appeals for Handicapped Aid in Hidalgo

Mrs. Rodney Newton Easter Seal Representative in Hidalgo County issues a last minute appeal for support of the Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults. The society says 812 handicapped people in New Mexico received treatment last year and urges expansion of services.

BLM Fire Crew Contained Grass and Brush Fire Near Lordsburg NM

A Bureau of Land Management team based in Las Cruces controlled a grass and brush fire 23 miles southwest of Lordsburg in the Adelbert Nelson Allotment, Peloncillo Mountains. The fire began Saturday afternoon, unknown cause, and 50 acres burned before control was declared Sunday with help from local ranchers and miners.

Woman's Club to Sponsor Art Show in Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Woman's Club will present an art show from April 18 to 21 at their building. Barbara Ingram, Wyoming artist, offers a three day solo exhibit April 18 to 20 with local artists showing April 21 at 8 p.m. The public is invited and information is available from Mrs. Don Weckworth.

Lions to Hold Bulb Sale Fundraiser

The Lordsburg Lions Club plans a house to house bulb sale this Friday and Saturday to raise funds. Bulbs are sold by the car ton, eight bulbs per carton for two dollars, with a free 150 watt bulb from Community Public Service Co. with each carton purchase.

Nursing Home Drive Advances in Hidalgo County

Letters are being mailed to Hidalgo County residents asking for contributions to Retirement Ranches Nursing Home in Lordsburg. HADECO aims for a 15000 dollar goal with events like an enchilada supper on April 26 to fund the project.

Cotton Extravaganza Tonight at Lordsburg High School Cafetorium

The Cotton Extravaganza fashion show is set for Friday April 11 at 7 30 p m in the Lordsburg High School Cafetorium. Seamtresses from Lordsburg Virden and Animas enter the contest with Miss Virginia Jones as home agent and two judges from Deming and Virden. Categories include Tea Time Casual Time Sugar Plum Time Activity Time Party Time and Junior Seamstress with age ranges noted.

Missing Woman Found Injured After All Night Search

Mrs. Josefa T. Padilla, 81, was found about noon Sunday ten miles northeast of town after a nightlong search. She had fallen into a deep arroyo with fractures in both arms and a severe hip injury, located by State Police Officer Joe Rutland, Deputy Sheriff Jack Ellis, and Farl Anderson. She and her husband had been near the dog pound at the water works when she got lost. A large local and federal search party had scoured the open country since Saturday afternoon.

Mavericks To Host Cobre In Dual Track Meet

The Mavericks prepare to host Cobre High School on April 16 at the new track field as part of a senior campaign. Local runners and throwers from Lordsburg placed in the Eagle Relays, with Steven Harper third in the mile and George Botzko third in the discus. Cobre enters with a six foot state champion high jumper. Coach Bohling asks for local fan support.

Smith Ford to Display New Ford Maverick in April

Smith Ford Co will display the Ford Maverick on Thursday April 17. The small U S built car competes with foreign models and offers 105 hp or optional 120 hp engines and up to 22 mpg. It sits shorter than the 1969 Falcon by eight inches and longer than the Volkswagen 1500 by eight and a half inches. Public invited to view the first 1970 model.

Action Filed Against Local Service Station

The State Attorney General's office filed suit in district court against Ray Sanchez Shell Station and employee Gene Wiggins for unfair trade practices. The complaint seeks an injunction and civil penalties up to $5,000 per violation, with a hearing set for April 29 at 9 am before District Judge Norman Hodges.

Judge Stanley To Hear Municipal Judge Case

District Judge Richard M. Stanley of Alamogordo will hear the quo warranto challenge filed by District Attorney E. C. Dave Serna questioning Edward M. Campbell’s authority as Lordsburg municipal judge. Hearing set for May 5 at 9 a.m. The case was filed January 10, 1969, after Judge Norman Hodges recused, delaying proceedings.

Man Charged With Narcotic Possession

Ray Allison Trejo, 24, formerly of Silver City, was arrested Sunday night by State Police Officer Jerry Wood and Sheriff Leroy McCarty on narcotic charges. Officers responding to a fight report at 406 Jordan St. found Trejo on the porch in possession of marijuana and he was charged before Magistrate C. L. Brown.
