Lordsburg County Chamber of Commerce hosts a Friday program at the Hall with registration at 9 AM. A free noon dinner, door prizes for farm families, and a fashion show by local merchants follow the meeting featuring Cotton and Onion production talks and soil demonstrations. Lions Club and Elks join the event with luncheon for attendees.
Mrs. Carl Lehman and husband mark the 19th year in business in Lordsburg beginning Friday April 10. The Lehmans have operated 800d merchandise and service, inviting customers to visit and noting plans to continue offering merchandise and service to all.
Al Peterson appointed Pury County Assessor. He began work in April and replaces prior assessor, with duties including property valuation and tax assessment for Brown County and nearby areas.
Linda Newel six of Lordsburg was injured when struck by an automobile driven by Robert Staney Medeiros of Lordsburg at about 415 p m Thursday. She suffered a broken leg and body lacerations and was taken to El Paso for further examination. The accident occurred at Railroad Ave and Main St as Linda and her grandmother tried to cross. A truck had halted for pedestrians and Linda ran in front of Medeiros who was passing the stopped truck. Witnesses and officers Lt Harvey Martin and Sheriff Hugh Pace investigated. Medeiros was jailed in Hidalgo County pending full inquiry.
Mrs C T Babers was installed as Lordsburg PTA president at a Monday meeting at the high school. New officers include Mrs Arthur Richins vice president and Mrs W B Jeffries recording secretary, with principals B B McAlister Burke Stiles R V Traylor and Mrs Dollie Gossett also named as second vice presidents. The group observed National Library Week April 12 to 18 and hosted a Book Mobile visit April 16.
The Style Show at the American Legion Hall in Lordsburg on April 17 at 1 30 P M is open to the public. Lordsburg residents are invited to attend with luncheon served by the Chamber of Commerce wives.
The Animas Soil team placed fifth and will compete at the National Land Judging Contest in Oklahoma City April 30 to May 1. New Mexico entrants Las Cruces Portales Los Lunas Lovington also advance, facing 47 states Puerto Rico and Hawaii.
Hidalgo County Fair Board met March 26 at the Court House to finalize plans for the 1959 County Fair. Dates set for September 1920 at the fair grounds with an estimated total cost around 1200 dollars. County donation 600 dollars leaves a 600 dollar shortfall to be raised. membership drive of 5 dollars per member annually to continue. Advertising in the Fair Book planned to raise funds with local and outside donors. Fair Book ready by July 1. Committee: J. F. Houser chair, Marshall Fuller sec/treas, Virgil Jones, Virden, Max De Vilbiss, Animas, Ray Johnson, Rodeo, directors.
The Robert Swan unit No 30 American Legion met April 6 at Mrs Mertice Brooks home and endorsed Mrs C C Fuller for District President of the 7th District to be chosen at the Las Cruces convention April 25 26. The group also endorsed Ethel Sloyer of Deming for Department President and listed delegates and alternates for the district convention.
District Nine American Legion and Auxiliary held their convention at Post 13 in Albuquerque on April 4. Attendees included Department Commander Paul Kaiser of Hobbs, Vice Commander Buford Slover Jr. of Animas and Deming, Adjutant G. Y. Failes of Albuquerque, and Service Officer Arthur Ortega. New district officers will be installed in Farmington on June 28, with Mrs. Buford Slover Jr. as First Vice President and Mrs. J. E. Allen as Second Vice President. Mrs. A. L. Mercier of Albuquerque addressed the Auxiliary, while District Nine President Mrs. Harold Jeblick presided.
A mobile dental unit visits Lordsburg from February 26 to April 2 delivering care to 242 children. Operated by the Division of Dental Health NM Department of Public Health and funded by the PTA, it cost $50 per day with minimal fees. Volunteers from Beta Sigma Phi and many groups supported the effort led by Mrs Jane Cureton.
Silver City ELP O E Committee 413 officers were installed by Lordsburg Lodge 1813 on a Wednesday night. Installing officers included Poindexter exalted ruler Strain Speer Miller Fisher Simptons Merrell Fallat Houser Walter Kerr. The following Wednesday Silver City lodge installed Lordsburg officers.
National Library Week runs April 12 to 18 across New Mexico. The PTLA sponsors the event with a school poster display in the Up To Date window. The Bookmobile visits Hidalgo County Library April 16 from 2 to 5 PM with coffee and doughnuts available.
