The Hidalgo County Democratic Party will hold a meeting to elect officers and alternates on Thursday April 15 at 7 00 PM. The venue is the Commission Chambers at the Hidalgo County Courthouse. The general public is invited. For further information contact Mauro Rico at 542-9618.
Shirley Frake announces the Wheels for Life Bike-A-Thon on May 1, 1993, in Animas to benefit cancer research at St. Jude. Anyone can ride, starting 8:00 a.m. from Animal Middle School, riding 10 miles on route 338 to the community center, with sponsor forms at local businesses and Western Auto in Lordsburg. Proceeds aid cancer cure efforts. information at 548-2585.
City officials await Gov. Bruce King approval to drill a new water well south of Lordsburg as $100,000 from the Legislature, funded by severance taxes, backs the project. If approved, the well near the old POW camps could serve as a backup, reducing transport distance from the north plant. City officials expect word in a couple of weeks on funding.
Lordsburg Senior Citizen Center seeks more than 30118 dollars to add wheelchair accessible restrooms and fund an architect. The plan also requests 15000 dollars for a 15 passenger van. Legislature has approved. Governor Bruce King must sign or veto. Bonds depend on voter approval and tax assessments.
The Animas Valley Community Association invites exhibitors to set up free booths at the 3rd Annual Spring Fling on May 1 1993. A coed softball tournament with a 25 entry fee requires at least ten players, four women. winning team receives 1993 Spring Fling T shirts. Contact Jody Hatch or Beckey Massey by April 17 1993 to reserve space. A Chamber ribbon cutting for Premier Communications LTD by Michael Anderson is set for April 14 at 10 30 AM in the Gavin Building 116 E Motel Drive. Michael Gavin of Snack Attack notes coffee and donuts will be served.
San Ignacio Lagoon hosts Petting the Whales events with David Rabb guiding visitors to interact with great gray whales. Rabb notes calmer behavior this year due to colder lagoon waters while hinting this may be the last year of such hands on encounters amid evolving conservation concerns.
Knights of Phythias host an Easter events Saturday starting at 1:00 PM at a vacant lot south of Seams Like Yesterday. A parade will form and move to Hidalgo County Fair Grounds where over 1800 eggs await discovery and a decorated bicycle contest offers prizes. Harvey Lang notes 200 plastic eggs contain local merchant prizes.
Central Elementary and Dugan Tarango Middle School students joined the statewide event at the College of Santa Fe on March 6. Participants include Frankie Aquino Joanha Arvizo America Bocanegra Ronnie Botello Sammie Garcia Cathy Garza Jenny Gonzales Isaac Kerr Laura Landeros Lezlie Placencia Sipriana Ramirez Jeoff Selleck and Michael Selleck. Sponsored by the New Mexico Library Association, the reading contest drew 150 students from 16 communities to promote reading, with plans announced for 1994.
