The Lordsburg Internment Camp page reflects on success as a strange thing built on perseverance and character. It notes furlough for Pie Louie Rotello, nurse assignments for Mrs. Senia Gibbs, and social visits as Lt. Rufus Crews and family travel for official business.
Lt Grace Linn of the Station Hospital departed Monday for a ten day leave in South Dakota. Mrs R C Baker wife of Col Haker commanding officer left Friday for Enid Oklahoma after a two month visit at Lordsburg. Capt and Mrs R B Deckum left April 2 for Roswell where they spent four days on official business.
Mrs. Rufus Crews hosted a morning coke party for army ladies from 10 to 12 on Saturday. Guest of honor was Mrs. Z W Tinker, wife of Capt Tinker who was moved from Lordsburg camp to Dallas. The Tinker family departed Thursday for their new station.
Major Daryl L. Whitmarsh departed Friday for a 15 day leave to be spent in New Orleans.
Mr and Mrs A L Rodriguez of El Paso welcomed daughter Cleo Lee born Sunday March 238. Mrs Rodriguez is former Cleo Warren daughter of Capt and Mrs A J Warren of Lordsburg. Capt Warren returned April 6 to the Lordsburg camp after two months at Ft. Custer officer school. Mrs Warren remained in El Paso with her child. Officers Club members spent Saturday evening at the club after a US entertainment at the Post Recreation Hall.
Lt. and Mrs. F. F. Northman held a quiet Tuesday gathering at their residence with guests including Chaplain and Mrs. Arthur De Camp and daughter Betty and Capt. and Mrs. R. D. Capps and son Ronnie.
The U S Navy recruiting cruiser arrived in Lordsburg Thursday with a four member crew to recruit for WAVES and SPARS. Chief Donovan Hoover, a former American Legion leader, highlighted naval activities and submarines at a high school presentation after a noon arrival. A large crowd attended the moving pictures and talks, with a detailed loudspeaker briefing accompanying the screening.
Betty Been daughter of City Marshal Leonard Been and Sgt. David Jones son of banker Arthur F. Jones wed Sunday morning after obtaining a license from County Clerk George Keener and having Judge Andrew Haugland perform the ceremony. Honeymoon postponed due to camp duties.
A group planning the Second War Loan met in Hidalgo lounge Monday night to launch the initial campaign and set May 1 as the end date, with activities to begin next Monday across the United States.
M. L. Dannelley a long time Grant County resident and former Hurley filling station owner died at his Silver City home last week after a heart attack. Born October 15 1870 he moved to New Mexico in 1891 worked for Chino Mines 18 years and retired to operate his station. Survived by his widow two daughters two sons ten grandchildren four great grandchildren. Funeral services conducted by Cox Mortuary were held Friday at the chapel with Rev. Wintrop Mayer officiating. Interment at the Masonic cemetery.
The Outlook Magazine publishes a full page portrait of Edwin E. Slick owner of the Indian Metals Company flu or spar mill and inventor with over 200 basic patents in the steel industry. It credits him with Cambria Steel's 500 ton daily blast furnace built in 85 days and notes vast savings from his patents. Lordsburg lauds his impact on mining and milling industries.
Paul Hudson, County Agent, notes that any agricultural construction costing over 1000 dollars and most other builds over 200 dollars require prior approval from the War Production Board. Applications for agricultural work go through USDA War Boards locally. others apply to the War Production Board in Albuquerque or El Paso. Clearing takes 7 to 10 days, with three weeks for overall approval. Priority is required for items like 2 inch pump pipe or larger.
Mrs Homer Rountree entertained a group Monday afternoon with sewing in honor of her sister Mrs Ernest Shrrmshire of Pecos Texas who visited over the weekend. Guests included Mesdames Roy Melugin L B Robinson Donald Johnson S M Chase P M Chase J A Lassalle F R Poage George Ewan J C Matthews J A Wathen Elbert Coursey G W Trimble Alton Powell Edward Sturm and the guest of honor.
The U S Treasury launches the 13 billion dollar War Loan drive on April 12 with a goal of 19 billion, using War Savings Bonds Series E and other securities. County chairs C C Fuller and P M Melanis lead the campaign running April 12 to May 1 with broad publicity across media.
The Lawrence M. Kednes Star Spar Mine will begin full operations around April 12. It will run an amalgamation machine producing at least fifteen tons daily, with 48 engineers foremen and workers on site by mid month, signaling a strong prosperity note and a sizeable payroll.
The biggest War Fund Ball of the year will be at La Fiesta on Saturday April 17. The army orchestra offers free music and admission costs two dollars in War Stamps, which guests keep after showing at the door, making it a near free dance. Remember the date, one week from this Saturday night.

The Department of Agriculture outlines regulations for legal slaughterers in New Mexico. County war boards will assign quotas and requires permits by April 1. Wholesale cuts must bear permit numbers and dealers must maintain purchase and sale records under USDA oversight.
L. L. Odle hosted Western Auto Supply Company magnates and nearby dealers at Lordsburg and Deming. Ralph Beebee of Los Angeles and H. Eb. Koepeell led the delegation with O. R. Trableed of Phoenix. The talk outlined a nationwide expansion for the 11 mountain states network. Odle touted a slogan and customer-friendly return policy as the group dined at Hotel Hidalgo.

Staff Sergeant Frank Weldon III, a 15 year old sophomore at El Paso High School, was elected to the rank, the first sophomore ever chosen for this position.
Hidalgo County School Board met in the superintendent Mary Fairly's office. Monroe Dunagan Wyn Pace and Luella Clark attended. H L Scofield elected president and Dunagan vice president. Local board vacancies filled and routine business conducted.
Supplementing last week obituary the funeral service for Thomas Allen Kerr mirrored the earlier service for Ida Frank lin Kerr. At the Methodist Church Rev Franklin R Ponge led a comforting ceremony with music by Thelma Ross Harold Scofield Dr C B Austin Sam Gass and James Sumner. Pallbearers included Oscar Allen George Wood George Wright Ralph Smith Leo Bates and Eugene Montague with honorary pallbearers listed. Burial was at Mountainview beside his wife as offices closed in tribute.
E. E. Slick of Indian Metal Company arrived from Pittsburgh to assist in rebuilding the fluorspar mill after a recent fire. Demand for the Lordsburg product exceeds current production capacity until facilities are expanded.
