Eighteen File For Hidalgo County Offices in Primary Race

Eighteen Hidalgo citizens filed for county offices on the June 7 primary ballot. District 1 sees former commissioner Bill Collins and Maura Rico. District 2 features Fausto Noce, Jr. facing Justin R. Kipp and Jake Martinez. District 3 includes Joe Burgess and Tom Jackson. Democrats Joe Schatz Johnnie Davis and Joe Croom contest the primary. Patsy Camacho and Randy Cooper vie for County Treasurer. Missy Morelos is unopposed for County Clerk. Olivia Ramirez is unchallenged for Assessor. Sheriff Lloyd Payne has no GOP challengers, while Gene Moore and Billy Darnell meet in the Dem primary. Ena Walter Mitchell runs unopposed in Probate Judge race. Statewide races include H. K. McPherson seeking the State Senate seat, with Bill Cobb John Arthur Smith and Claude Leyendecker also in the Deming slate. Tom Foy and Dave Diaz vie for State Representation, both Silver City area. Mike Lewis faces Edward Hand for District Attorney in November. Hand hails from Deming, Lewis from Silver City.

William Cobb Seeks State Senate Seat in 35th District

Republican William E. Cobb of Columbus announces candidacy for State Senate 35th District. Cobb, 65, a former North Carolina state senator and current New Mexico resident, cites employment growth as key issue and notes primary election activity ahead of June 7 primaries. He previously ran against I M Smalley in 1984 and says the field is wide open with Smalley's retirement.

Animas Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration April 15 from 9 00 to 11 00. Parents and prospective students should go to Room 105 of the new Elementary School with birth and immunization records. Children must be 5 by September 1 1988 to start in fall 1988. Current kindergarten students will have no classes that day.

Osteoporosis Study Begins in Lordsburg Monday

Lordsburg hosts a University of Michigan School of Public Health osteoporosis study from April 11 to 16 at Hidalgo Medical Center. Eligible participants are women 50 and older who have lived in Lordsburg most of their lives. Wrist bone density will be measured with a simple procedure. Tests are free and participants receive ten dollars for time. The project explores brittle bone disease and its link to local fluoride levels in drinking water.

Bicycle Clinic Set Saturday April 23 in Lordsburg

A bicycle registration clinic will be held Saturday April 23 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the Lordsburg Police Department parking lot. Owners should bring bicycles for examination and serial number check. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent.
