A June social round up in La Verne features births and visits as families travel to Los Angeles and Long Beach. Residents attend Pomona College events, celebrate graduates, and families gather for picnics and parades while the town boards rehire teachers for the next year amid a busy community calendar.
Inspectors Trout of Los Angeles and Clemmett of Washington with Postmaster McClellan inspected the Lordsburg and San Dimas routes and favored consolidation with a single carrier from Lordsburg starting at seven in the morning. Changes to include LaVerne territory and San Antonio Avenue were proposed and a final decision rests with Congress and inspectors. War talks overshadow rural delivery fears as Carrizal reports spark talk of a U S clash with Mexico.
The Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Dept announces the dedication of its new fire hall on Saturday July 15 1916. A program of unusual interest will be published next week. Ice cream and cake will be served to raise funds for equipment as a ladies committee assists guests. Business houses are asked to close at three oclock for the event.
At a meeting of the Lordsburg Volunteer Fire Company officials decided to dedicate the new city fire hall on Saturday afternoon and evening July 15. A program with an exhibition and contest between opposing squads will be held and the public may inspect the hall and apparatus as fire boys display appreciation for their equipment.
Thomas Morris sold Camp Morris in Liveoak canyon to A Eno of Long Beach. The camp was renamed Camp En o and Morris moved to Monrovia with Mrs Morris. The Enos plan improvements including a pavilion and dance hall and have bought several lots and a store. Eno reportedly has unlimited capital and acquired the camp as a hobby.
W. F. England, returning from the Church of the Brethren gathering at Winona Lake Indiana, says he has never seen such broad prosperity in the east. He notes factories running at full swing and widespread business activity.
Edward R. Rider foreman for a Hemet area pipeline blasting crew was killed when a large rock fragment struck him after a blast at 4 45 pm He died at 5 20 pm He lived in Los Angeles with his wife and two step children and is survived by his brothers W P Rider of Lordsburg James Rider of Avery Oklahoma and three sisters in Oklahoma New Mexico and California
Grace Rider W P Rider and Dora Bartram express heartfelt thanks to friends who offered kindness and floral tributes during their bereavement.
A Sunday dinner at Mr and Mrs John Sealer honored Mrs Sealer and Miss Eunice Vinsonhaler. Twelve covers were set with guests including Mr and Mrs T Jones and family Mr and Mrs Vinsonhaler of Glendora Mr Berton Harry of Pomona Mrs Caroline Howard and Mrs Mary Shively of Lordsburg. All enjoyed the gathering and wished many happy returns.
Beaver's Garage adds Chevrolet agency to its repair and sales operations in the foothill district. Frank Kenzie leads the new car sales, with a modern plant 50 by 100 feet, fireproof build, and a ladies rest room. Former Pomona customers are now bringing work to Beaver's.
Mr and Mrs Henry L Kuns take Ruth Bartlett Flora Rice and Elsie Barton on a journey to Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley planning camping next week Rice returns in about two weeks The Kuns family go by auto to northern California with Barton accompanying to Berkeley to visit her brother Professor Geo Barton at Berkeley High School
Rev Edwin H Fretz pastor of Lincoln Avenue Church Pasadena died suddenly at his home Sunday night from congestion of the brain He was 49 and left a wife and child He was a native of Pennsylvania and previously served at Lordsburg M E Church around 1897 after graduating from an eastern theological school
The Pomona Valley Hughes Club plans a large ratification meeting at Ganesha Park on Friday June 30 with an old fashioned basket lunch at 6 pm free coffee and ice cream. Tickets cost 15 cents and serve as Hughes club membership cards. About a thousand people expected with a band and speeches. politics not asked, only support for Hughes. Morris H. Wilson Allen P. Nichols organize. W D Frederick handles ticket sales.
Sheriff Cline issued a public statement in Spanish assuring Mexican residents of protection and urging calm. He advised continuing regular labor, sobriety, avoiding saloons, and refraining from arming groups that could spark disorder, reinforcing that Americans neighbors will safeguard lawful conduct.
Former blacksmith J Colbert has recently left his shop with his family and traveled by automobile to Pearce Arizona where he has taken up a government claim.
Mrs Douglas Marshburn of El Medina Orange county was in Lordsburg last week. She was formerly Miss Ora Bruner a student at the college.
