Kenneth Johnson age 14 died from skull injuries after a bakery wagon toppled during a collision with a passing railcar at Brighton avenue Spring Lake. His father Ira Johnson, a Voorhees bakery employee, is badly hurt and hospitalized along with others treated for contusions and internal injuries. The horse died on impact and the wagon was shattered.
Councilman and Mrs A C Johnson of Monmouth Beach hosted Mr and Mrs Raymond of Easton in Long Branch. Mrs Raymond, formerly Miss Mabel R Tudor, a former Long Branch teacher, visited for the first time in twenty years. She met about 25 former pupils at the improvem school facilities. The visitors left for their home after a short stay and a drive back in their automobile.
James J W M of Shisbury bought the Henry H Glassen home on Broad Street from Robert Vanderveer estate in Red Bank. The Red Bank purchase price was about 16000 dollars with grounds and improvements added over twenty five years. buyer plans to reside there.
Jesse A. Howland of Sea Bright is building a concrete bridge over Wreck Pond for the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders. The $10,000 structure began September 10 and will be completed before cold weather. the bridge features abutment walls and a wide roadway replacing the old span.
Mrs. Sarah B. Knipe widow of Samuel E. Knipe former Oceanic Presbyterian pastor died in Phoenix Arizona after a short illness from paralysis. Samuel E. Knipe led the church for twenty five years and the couple were longtime parishioners admired for their service.
In Long Branch the Democratic and Republican executive committees plan reorganizing at City Hall. Meetings will place in the Council chamber and the ea room upstairs and downstairs respectively. New election law allows open primary voting and vacancy notes hint at uneven races with several seats open in the first district.
Two young Middletown men Albert Hendrickson and Fritz Pen collided while riding bikes last Friday night causing minor injuries. Henry Walling a Port Monmouth contractor received an eye injury while inspecting a phone day and may lose sight. Elsie Luker 11 was knocked unconscious but recovered and walked home. Edward T Gaffney 11 months died of marasmus. burial held at Mount Carmel cemetery West Long Branch.
Dr J Duncan Spaeth of Princeton University will deliver a third course of lectures under the University Extension Society of Philadelphia. The program at Interm School Auditorium Oct 10 24 Nov 21 Dec 5 19 features Socrates Paul St Frances Luther Rousseau Lincoln among six lectures. The event supports Long Branch teachers and includes a musical program by the Musical Club.
Mrs Helen Birnbaum, sister of GC Maas, died yesterday at age 59 at the Maas residence on Ocean avenue after long illness. Funeral directors Hyer and Flock in charge. Remains to be sent by special train to New York Wednesday morning. Interment Salem Fields cemetery Brooklyn. Mr Packer Improving after gall stones and kidney trouble.
In New York on September 30 Maurice Rosenthal, who had left his wife 17 years earlier, appeared at her Brooklyn home and demanded food claiming starvation. He then shot and killed her before turning the pistol on himself at the Millinery Store on Broad Street. The tragedy follows a long separation and unsettling confrontation.
Rescue efforts continue in the Monmouth vein at the Continental Mine near Centralia as Toshesky, trapped since Friday when a pillar collapsed, is fed through a two inch pipe by forty rescuers. A four inch pipe will be added to send clothing and further aid.
Sea Bright hook and line fishermen report large catches with about 6000 pounds landed yesterday and a 1992 pound haul on a single boat led by Paul Johnson. Beach prices run six cents per pound while bait shortages limit boats out to about a dozen of sixty. Yodeler Green to debut at the Grand with a unique yodeling act supervised by the act’s manager.
The funeral of Henry Walker Bishop dies at his Low Moor home and will be held tomorrow at his Pittefield Massachusetts residence with burial in Lenox. Bishop, a renowned Chicago attorney since 1856, was born in Berkshire County on June 2 1829. His son’s death at Williams College inspired him to found the Bishop M Training School for Nurses.
The Long Branch Musical Club met at Intermedial School Auditorium with sixty members. City Superintendent Christopher Gregory presided. The first regular rehearsal is set for Monday October 1 in the auditorium. additional changes likely.
Asbury Park Lodge No. 1407 Loyal Order of Moose was instituted last night with Organiser Bennett presiding and Robert W. Warwick district director assisting. More than 500 Moose joined a street parade led by Warwick as grand marshal and police platoon, with the Good Will Band.
A device described as a foot long fitted percussion cap caused alarm when it fell to the floor as authorities entered the site. No injuries reported and investigations continue to determine origin and intent.
