Highlands enjoys improvements that fuel a building boom totaling over 159000, lifting property values and spurring multiple new homes and business structures along Winlight Terrace, Navesink Avenue, and Bay Avenue. Notable projects include cottages on Waich and Navesink, hotels, schools, and brick homes, with expenditures ranging from four to ten thousand dollars.
J Cherry of Sandy Hook built the post office at cost 5000. Straus building 4000 Willoughby stores and Williams buneglows 3000. Sea Side Hotel improvements cost 3000. Plans show contracts for at least ten more houses soon. Last summer Highlands hosted a major carnival with about 60000 visitors, boosting town activity. Borough Council opened three bids for Fourth avenue concrete sidewalks with prices from 1 34 percent to 18 percent cents per foot. Jacob T. Stout & Son’s bid 1 34 percent was accepted and work will begin at once. Also, a hearse horse owned by Robert Smith of the Red Bank undertaker died Friday night from colic and another horse nearly died but was saved after treatment. both horses had traveled to Holmdel for a funeral.
