Norfolk reports heavy damage from last night's wind and rain storm. At least two bodies recovered from a small boat near Pinery Point, with eight to ten feared dead overall. Dozen schooners and several fishing boats damaged as Lambert's Point craft and the naval receiving ship Franklin suffer severe blows.
Red Bank’s Jerusha Jones aged 77 died at the home of Harry Ivins after a long illness. Born April 8, 1836 in Red Bank, she was the daughter of L. A. and Rebecca Harris Jones and the last of her immediate family. Funeral at Mr. Wins home Monday at two, Rev. Robert MacKellar officiating. interment at Christ Episcopal Cemetery, Shrewsbury. She had worked as a dressmaker and later sold cold cream locally. She was aunt to Mrs. John Guire and Mrs. Charles Allen.
Mayor reads Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as veterans and sons decorate graves across six cemeteries in the morning and hold services honoring the fallen.
Memorial Day 1913 tribute by the Grand Army Post and Sons of Veterans drew a large audience at City Hall after a parade from the post room. Rev Dr Abbott praised unity and memory while recalling graves marked known and unknown, Arlington’s monument, and the cost of war.
Memorial day was observed at Red Bank with a solemn requiem mass at Mt Olivet cemetery and a parade by Veterans organizations through Shrewsbury Little Silver and Fair View cemeteries. Graves were decorated, schoolchildren joined the processions, and benedictions were given by local pastors. A luncheon and Board of Education dinner followed at the Red Bank activities.
A civic parade features the Deal Fire Ladies celebrating a new auto hook and ladder truck praised as a beauty and point of pride for firefighters and citizens. Cottagers participate in a unique community celebration surrounding the new apparatus.
Borough of Deal celebrated its fire department’s new 100 h p apparatus with a parade and open house at the fire headquarters. Volunteers in regulation uniforms showcased the Webb combination engine and American Lafrance ladder truck, welcomed residents from 2 to 6 PM, and received visiting firemen from nearby cities for an evening reception.
An elderly lady narrowly escaped death when a flagman, Fiore, pushed her back from an oncoming southbound express at the Red Bank station. He shouted warnings as the train approached, leaped onto the track, and carried her to safety just as the locomotive passed. The crowd gasped, she was briefly unconscious, then recovered and continued her journey.
Postmaster General Burleson released the Postal Survey Board report denying former Postmaster General Hitchcock’s claim that the system was self sustaining under Republicans. The board accuses Hitchcock of falsifying figures and unjust bookkeeping to attack policy, and says there was a deficit of over 750000 in 1911 rather than a surplus of 219000, implicating Republican officeholders. The report was ordered by Burleson and prepared by four assistant postmasters general and a chief clerk.
The Winpfheimer gift is announced for a purchase at the 16th commencement on Thursday. Seniors and juniors will divide a $100 yearly fund. Dr. Harry B. Slocum Mrs. Meyer and Mrs. Harper will speak at the annual affairs with a large attendance.
The annual commencement featured women graduates from the Whotynuath Memorial Hospital Visiting School at Lycerne. Mrs Harper Flin t announced a $100 annual endowment from Mr and Mrs Charles A L Wimpfmner for the Training School for Nurses, with prizes of 59 to juniors and 40 to seniors. Dr Harry B Slocum and Rev B Briggs Nash led the program, praising nursing as a profession and stressing care for the sick and infant mortality reduction.
The twenty two special session laws approved by Governor Fielder push total to 34S chapters and six joint resolutions. The bill pack includes Egan Chancellor-Sheriff jury reform and McDermott Walsh commission amendments. The Walsh act is amended to allow a 5 percent petition recall and yearly commissioner recall, plus payroll provisions for firemen and policemen and election transfer rules.
Bathing season begins at Long Branch for 1913 with visitors enjoying the bluff walk and sands. Commissioner Mack prepares pavilions. officials plan daily drift refuse removal and new lighting around the bluff for evening outings.
