Mrs Mary Elizabeth Campbell wife of Peter B Campbell of Shrewsbury died after a long illness aged 86. She leaves a husband two sons J W B Campbell and Harry Campbell and is grandmother of Roy Campbell of Washington. Funeral at Christ Church Shrewsbury with burial in churchyard. Born Belvi nes New Jersey November 12 1828 she moved to Shrewsbury young and married in 1853. Eight years ago a fall left her bedridden. Also noted are deaths of Charles Parker Henry Corlies and Mrs Mary Towers with funeral plans on file.

Impressive services marked the annual reception of sodalities at the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea. Rev W W Cantwell administered the ceremony with hymns including Immaculata and Our Lady of Good Council. Mary McGregor led the procession carrying a new barrel as Misses Mary and Bessie Herbert contributed in music and ceremony.

Holiday road races boost Long Branch cycle club event
Crowds of over a thousand filled Bath avenue and Pearl street for a Long Branch Cycle Club meet with seven races won by R. Borden P. C. Heidrick and J. Johnson. A morning bicycle trial at Freehold ended 4 to 1 for Freehold against Long Branch. The afternoon baseball park opener featured Little pitching a no hitter through seven and an 8 to 1 Long Branch win.

Washington Park opened its third season under a new committee. Over two thousand visitors attended the evening program, with the G A R post and Sons of Veterans as guests. The Long Branch Military Band conducted a two part patriotic concert supervised by Prof. George A. Parslow, followed by a late program.

Burned at Gas Works Injures William Newton
William Newton, a young colored gas works worker, suffered burns to his hands arms and chest while aiding repairs to a gas generator. Bystanders rushed him to Dr J Ty Welch for treatment before he was taken home and then to Monmouth Memorial Hospital. His injuries are painful but not serious and he is out several days.

London May 61 A vast pageant marked the city’s freedom of the city for Theodore Roosevelt. Attended by 1200 dignitaries including the Duke of Connaught and Ambassador Reid, Roosevelt rode in the Lord Mayor’s State Coach to Guild Hall where he spoke with Sir J C Dimsdale. Mrs Roosevelt sat among spectators as American flags and Teddy Bears adorned the scene.

About 4,000 of the 20,000 attendees watched the Freehold Driving Association Decoration Day meet finish a five and a half hour program. Seven races covered trotting pacing running and a mule event with wide participation and varied purse amounts. A cornerstone ceremony for the Church of the Holy Spirit in Asbury Park drew a large crowd with Monsignor Fox and Rt. Rev. James A. McFaul absent due to illness.

Veterans from James H Morris Post No 46 and James Morris Camp No 25 Sons of Veterans led a full Memorial Day program from dawn to evening across Greenlawn and Glenwood cemeteries and Ocean Park Casino. Commander Flinn marshaled the parade, with Henry Wingert Jr in charge of Veterans songs. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was read at each stop, graves decorated, and General King spoke at the casino event noting Long Branch’s memory.

Long Branch Takes Part in Monmouth YMCA Field Meet
The fifth annual Monmouth County YMCA field meet at Asbury Park Athletic Grounds saw Asbury Park win with 1064 points in 167 events. Matawan was second, Long Branch third, Freehold fourth, and Atlantic Highlands fifth. Long Branch notable placers included R. Ousterman third in the 100 yard dash and multiple top finishes in sprints and relay events, while Asbury Park posted many wins and seconds across events.

New Era Monuments Mark Resting Place of Immigrants
The New Era Monument Association honored deceased members with grave services for George Manguld at Greenlawn cemetery. Members then moved to the New Era plot in West Long Branch where Henry Schoenlein spoke. The plot commemorates 400 immigrants from the ill fated steamer New Era, wrecked at Deal Beach on November 1, 1864.
