First presidential primaries spark busy Long Branch vote

Polls opened at 1 PM for the state’s first presidential preferential primary. Taft Roosevelt and La Follette drew crowds as voters discussed the campaign. Democratic delegates favor Governor Wilson while Slocum and Sefilly compete. Republicans face a split between Roosevelt supporters and Taft regulars. Continued on third pages.

Champion Riders to Compete Here on Memorial Day

The Long Branch Cycle Club hosts a Memorial Day bicycle show at Stengel's track featuring top amateurs led by Jack Townsend of the Dominica Lyceum A C. Among the contenders are E Poshle John Beck Joseph Kopsky H J Murphy Bert Baker and Herman Lind. These riders were finalists in the 100 mile Newark Velodrome race and chosen for the Olympic team bound for Stockholm in June. Also notes include local ads for sod and soil sales and the Phila Tee Cream Co season opening.

Transfers Granted In New Jersey Court Ruling

Judge John Js Foster granted transfers for voters who moved since the last general election in Freehold yesterday and today. Many applicants faced disappointment as some did not vote last fall or register by affidavit, leaving them unable to vote in the upcoming primary. Also reported were several criminal cases: William Green convicted of carrying a revolver in Asbury Park. Willian Hawkins released on promise to appear before the grand jury. Phoenix acquitted of theft in Asbury Park. John Looney found guilty of a minor assault tied to a 4 year old in Middletown. Wilson Nixon convicted of carrying a concealed weapon in Freehold. Sadie Walker charged with illegal liquor sales in Atlantic Avenue and Nectar Place, Agbury Park, remanded for trial.

Mrs. Borden Dead in Shrewsbury After Sudden Heart Trouble

Mrs. Caroline Maxson Borden of Sycamore Avenue Shrewsbury died suddenly this morning at about seven from heart trouble. Aged 65, she leaves husband Randolph Borden three daughters Nellie Borden Bessie Borden Mary Borden and three sisters Jennie Bell Mary Maxson and Chadwick. Funeral Thursday at 1 50 p m from her residence with Rev Dwight L Parsons officiating. Interment at Presbyterian burying ground Shrewsbury. funeral director Robert T Smith Red Bank. She was born Point Pleasant daughter of the late John Maxson and lived in Shrewsbury forty years. A devoted Presbyterian, her death is a loss to church circles.

Aged Resident Dead After 36 Years in Town

John Howland aged 82 or 83 died at his Rockwell avenue home at 5 am after a heart ailment. He was conscious to the end and had lived in Long Branch for 36 years after moving from Hamilton, New Jersey. Survived by his widow and seven children in New York, Red Bank, West Long Branch, and local residents. Hyer & Fleck funeral directors handling arrangements. services not announced.

Park Opens Thursday With May Pole Drill and Concert

Washington Park reopens for the season Thursday with a May Pole drill by primary pupils. A festival guided by the women directors precedes an evening concert by the Long Branch Military Band featuring national airs. Grand Army veterans are invited to attend. Public is welcomed to the opening.

Soldiers Graves Are Flagged Today in Seven Cemeteries

A Morris Post and Morris Camp committee flagged the graves of over 200 soldiers under their jurisdiction in seven cemeteries, with West Long Branch housing the most. Revolutionary War graves were noted in Oakhurst, while veterans will visit schools tomorrow for exercises at City Hall. A touring car trip to the Freehold race meet leaves Ocean Garage at 11:16 AM.

Eldredge Retired After 25 Years With Swift Chicago Beef

Charles A. Eldredge ends a quarter century of service with the Swift Chicago Beef Company and will take a month of full pay leave before lifetime pension starting July 1. He is the first New York area employee to retire on pension, with Reese Evans succeeding him in Newark Long Branch duties. Eldredge helped grow the Long Branch branch, expanding Asbury Park coverage, and remains active in local trade and Masonic orders. He plans to live in Long Branch or retire near the New England coast.

Boy bit by dog at former Monmouth Park grounds

Cecil McCloud of Oceanport was bitten by a dog Sunday morning near the old Monmouth Park race track. The boy, watching preparations for a baseball game, sought water when the dog pursued him. The wound was cauterized after the attack.

Change Telephone System Switchboard to Start Wednesday Night

New York Telephone Company workers ready the new common battery system in the Third avenue building. On Wednesday evening May 29 the switchboard will go into operation and all subscribers from Long Branch and West End magneto central offices will be connected to the new system. Death of West Long Branch resident shocks community

William Slocum, a longtime West Long Branch farmer and public servant, died suddenly of heart failure at 50. He served on the West Long Branch School Board and as district clerk, active in the fire company and local politics. Funeral at the Slocum home on Wall Street Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Burial at West Long Branch. Survived by a wife Ella Woolley and two sisters.

Kidding Auto Cripples Indian at Elkwood Recreation

A touring car driven by a Sea Bright woman skidded on sprinkled asphalt on Broadway near the New Broadway Theatre. The car reversed onto the sidewalk, smashing through Kidding Auto’s Indian figure and barely missing a display window. TAN MAKES RECORD RUN FOR JERSEY CENTRAL TRAIN

President Taft arrived in New Jersey aboard the Jersey Central Presidential special, steaming 7 miles in 12 minutes with a stop at Vineland. Engineer Van Middlesworth led the run from Freehold to Lakehurst and Bridington, with Taft speaking on Employers' Liability Law and receiving a large ovation in Lakewood and Lakehurst.
