Negro who halted woman in street found guilty of assault

Berley Thornton of Freehold was convicted yesterday of assault and battery on Ollie Curtis, who was stabbed in the back near Millie Hennessey’s Peach Orchard home on April 24. The defense claimed Curtis provoked the incident. Thornton’s sentence was deferred.

Bids for new Morris Avenue high school exceed estimates

At yesterday’s Board of Education meeting five bids were opened for the Morris Avenue high school project. One bidder, R. H. Hughes, was local. others hailed from outside the area. Bids, excluding heating, all surpassed the tentative board estimate and were laid over to June 9 for further consideration.
