Railroad Bridge at Red Bank Opens for Travel

The Red Bank railroad bridge is now open for travel after sixteen months of construction. Over 3,000,000 tons of steel and 10,000 tons of concrete were used. Trains have been running on a single track since April 23, with work continuing to complete the project.

Finest Bridge Opens Over North Shrewsbury River

The New York and Long Branch Railroad opened its fine new bridge at Red Bank this morning with both tracks in service. The southbound track began April 28 and now complete, travel is uninterrupted. Contractor George B. Spearin completed eighty pedestal foundations and end abutments by mid March 1914, with piles driven ten feet below river bed and cofferdams, stone riprap, and concrete totaling over ten thousand tons for the project.

City Recorder fines and cases in morning court

Recorder Arrowsmith handled several cases. Joseph Cattadino faced a charge for hitting a boy with a ball. sentence suspended. Richard J. Buck of the 113% Coast Artillery Corps was fined $5 for drunkenness. William Williams of Asbury Park was fined $5 and ten days after being found in a roadway. Edward Shoemaker, drunk and disorderly with a possible enlistment note, had sentence suspended until May 23. Marion Cox of Red Bank was jailed for being drunk and disorderly. Additional notes include painting at Schaefer’s cottage on Washington Street by Woolley Weisner and E. C. Schaefer.

To Kalon Honors Memory of Dead in Memorial Service

Knights of the Golden Eagle To Kalon Castle No 72 held a memorial service at the Odd Fellows building Broadway and Pearl Street with about 150 attendees including widows. Supreme Chief George A. Lippincott presided delivering a speech on Brotherhood and service. Rev Martin L Ferris gave the memorial address and the Altar stood draped with the American flag.

Chamber of Commerce Plans Boost for Opening Baseball Season

At the Long Branch Chamber of Commerce meeting tonight at City Hall a commerce committee is to be formed to promote the new baseball season at Baseball Park on Wednesday afternoon. President Me Faddin is expected to appoint the committee and attract large attendance. 75 members have joined under amended bylaws with more anticipated. The country store draws prizes Tuesday night with grand theatre ads.

Pioneer Captain Henry Edwards Dies at 78 in Oceanport

Oceanport resident Captain Henry Bartine Edwards died at his Pemberton Avenue home after a lingering illness in his seventy-ninth year. He retired three years ago at 76 after decades in ship building, designing vessels for the Pattent Line and steering schooners like Pleasure Bay and Little Silver. Survived by wife and son Captain Hiram Edwards, he was known for cheerful demeanor and early sailing from Eatontown Dock to Hudson River points.

Red Bank Firemen Plan Local Parade and Ball

Red Bank firemen drop a big summer parade plan for the borough and organize a Friday night parade followed by a Lyceum theatre ball. A general committee including John Bainton Peter Klippel Alonso Dewitt Walter VanBrant and John Conover was named to arrange what is billed as the largest firemen event in Red Bank. The Lyceum interior will be decorated and boxes reserved for town and surrounding department officials with first-rate music planned for a large attendance.

Rear End Auto Collision In Front Of Broadway Theatre

Photographer Arthur Hull driving a high geared I M F touring car failed to stop and bumped the rear of Fred Smythe’s auto near the Broadway Theatre. Both Hull lamps were damaged, Smythe’s car suffered only minor damage, and Hull assumed all repair costs.

The Boy Scouts of West Long Branch worshipped at Old First M E Church for the first time. They drilled before the service led by Harry Hopper. Dr J B Whitton spoke on five biblical youths and urged the Scouts to wear the armor of faith. Fire destroys Edgewood Farm in North Lakewood blaze

A large fire at Edgewood Farm in North Lakewood killed two horses and two cows and destroyed two barns and out-buildings. The blaze began in the horse barn at 4 45 pm, spreading to poultry and machinery structures with losses near ten thousand dollars. Neighbors and farm workers rescued other animals as roofs collapsed about thirty minutes after discovery. The milk house was spared and the main house suffered limited damage.

Yeggm en Loots New Strand Theatre Safe in Broadway Heist

Masked burglars used nitroglycerin to blast open the New Strand Theatre safe at 47th street stealing about $5,000. Four watchmen were forced aside and bound while robbers emptied the till. A nearby policeman stood watch as the crew pretended to be detectives. After three hours the safe was opened and money taken. one guard freed others and all fled. Time table changes announced May 28.
