Vera Cruz dispatch reports General Zapata close to Mexico City within ten miles with about 6000 men. Rumors say loyal troops mobilized from the capital as civilians flee. Word spreads of potential looting and disorder as Zapata’s forces move toward Topilejo.

City Plumbers Board Creates Licensure, Exempts Some

The Examining Board for City Plumbers passed a final reading adding a board of examiners for master and journeymen plumbers in Long Branch. All must pass a satisfactory exam to obtain a license, with exemptions for licensed master and current journeymen applying within thirty days. A resolution thanked Dr. Paul Kahn for his leadership, and Dr. J T Welch was congratulated on his reappointment. The Board of Health annual meeting for officer elections is set for Tuesday May 26.

State Prison Labor Commission Formed in Trenton

The State Prison Labor Commission organized in Trenton with Cook Conkling as President and Byers as Secretary. It will study the prisoner wage system under the 1914 act and consider placing more convicts on the roads and at the Leesburg State Prison Farm.

Red Bank church social welcomes 200 new members

A Pastors Aid Society event at First Methodist Church Red Bank drew nearly two hundred attendees. The evening featured a piano solo by Qatendorf violin by Ostendorf vocal numbers by Leroy Chamberlain and a church quartet. Queen Heather choir and Grace Taylor readings followed before a handshake session and refreshments.

Resignations from four Lee Branch teachers were read and accepted at the board meeting. Retiring are Miss Pauline Stein Miss Charlotte White Miss Bertha Jennings and Miss Louisa Spence. Wounded Sailors From Vera Cruz Arrive In New York

Sixty two wounded and ill sailors and marines from the Vera Cruz occupation arrived aboard the hospital ship Solace. They were taken to the Marine hospital at the Brooklyn navy yard for care. The photo shows four sailors shot by snipers.

Hotel liquor licenses denied in Monmouth county discreet caution

Judge John E. Foster refused renewal for Samuel H. Mount Englishtown and William B. Lockwood Freehold while renewing for Ward Simonson Monmouth House and Michael Welsh Wolcott Hotel Freehold. He warned against selling to drunkards and suggested harsher actions if remonstrances recur. Mount seen intoxicated on April 26, driving refusal.

New Jersey Sons of Veterans Report Membership and Camps

The New Jersey Sons of Veterans total 1,689 members across four camps, led by James B. Morris Camp No. 25 with 216 members in Paterson. Morris Camp plans to double its membership after Memorial Day and will usher at City Hall memorial service two weeks from tomorrow. The group, with branches in Mount Holly Belleville New Brunswick and Vineland, also supports Epworth League plans at St. Luke's M E Church.

Fourth annual requiem mass at Mount Olivet Cemetery

The fourth annual solemn high mass for the repose of souls buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery will be offered on Memorial Day at a temporary altar near the priests’ monument. Interclass Relays Break Junior Record at Meet

Chattle's Interclass teams competed in long distance events yesterday with the highlight the mile relay won by the Class of 1916 in 3 minutes 5.4 5 seconds breaking the previous mark. Everett Covert led the winning quartet with Joseph Perry, D Glenn Riddle, and Covert also taking the one mile, while the 440 and 880 dashes saw top finishes by Joseph Perry and Joseph Oxley.

Dozens Dead in Detroit Rubber Works Explosion

A May 15 explosion at the Mexican Crude Rubber Company plant in Delray Detroit killed at least twelve workers with ten bodies recovered and ten more missing. Fire and debris hinder search as police and fire units race to rescue possible survivors. The cause remains unknown.
