Court designates grand jury foreman for first time

Benjamin John Parker was named foreman of the May grand jury by Justice Willard Voorhees at Freehold. The jurors include Atlantic Sidney J Beers and others from Atlantic to Wall. Voorhees instructed jurors to investigate cases and indict for murder or manslaughter as warranted. He noted local cases in Red Bank, Hat Town, Rumson and a Rumson property grievance. Local judges announced upcoming sessions in Freehold and Long Branch. Sunday school at the Baptist Church met in the morning for the first time in years, with a new yearlong trial arrangement.

Samuel Smith Dead After Brights Disease at 69

Samuel Smith aged 69 of Central avenue died yesterday of Brights disease. He leaves a wife and three daughters Miss Sarah J. Smith Mrs. Marsha Brown of Asbury Park and Isabel Smith of Marlboro. Also survived by five brothers and sisters. Funeral tomorrow afternoon from the house with burial at Lincroft. Long Branch Odd Fellows attend Grand Encampment sessions in Atlantic City led by Charles J. Williams who is elected grand junior warden, with Adjutant Bilas Marks and Edward E. Lacour on his staff. Francis Art Store Attracts Shoppers With Renovations

Interior decorations and new exhibits make the Francis art store appealing. A remodelled show window increases light, attracting visitors who admire the evolving displays. The Wraneis store remains the city’s sole establishment of its kind. Richard Wight cottage sold to J. M. Rolston, Allenhurst florist, who plans to move with his family soon.

Desertion Split Custody in Harris Divorce Case

Elbert L Harris of Allenhurst waived custody of six year old Gladys in a Newark Vice Chancellor court action for absolute divorce from Mabel K Harris of Long Branch. An agreement gave custody to Mrs Harris and dissolved the custody prayer. desertion was the basis. Harris later pursued proof of desertion and a decree of absolute divorce followed. Mrs Harris, born Emmons, had married Harris at Ocean Grove on June 6 1908.

Inter Class field and track meet at Baseball Park

Arrangements are complete for the second annual Inter Class field and track meet of the Chatile High School Athletic Association to be held tomorrow afternoon. Four classes and two Grammar School grades compete in thirteen events including sprints, distance, hammer, shot put, high jump, and a relay. Grammar entrants challenge High School athletes in events like the one mile and 10 yard dash with Bailey of the 10th class carrying his color in the latter. Officials include Referee C S Stone and Clerk of Course W A D Clark with a full slate of track and field judges and timekeepers.

Opening of Oceanic auditor ium and moving picture playhouse

A large crowd attended the opening night at the Oceanic auditorium and moving picture playhouse. Proprietors Edward Soffing and Willian Hunt offered souvenirs to attendees. Tomorrow is Bargain Day and a notice asks for the return of a lost child’s white trees between South Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. City Considers Trolley Network and Transit Upgrades

City council heard a report by Councilman Gulick on proposals to expand trolley connections to railroad stations along Broadway and Third Avenue with a spur to Branchport depot. Officials pledged cooperation with Atlantic Coast and Monmouth County Electric, and a map of a proposed system will be prepared for next meeting.

Former Assessor Nelson Appointed to Succeed Late Fay

Stephen A. Nelson, former Long Branch assessor, was appointed by the mayor to succeed the late Albert Fay. Fay’s wards, including the First and Second, will be assigned to Nelson. The Second Ward covers Elberon and West End, areas with costly homes and great wealth.

Parker Wins Auto Accident Suit in Red Bank Jury Decision

Benjamin John Parker, collector of Shrewsbury township, won a $69.80 judgment against Beta Fertilizer Company of Eatontown in Red Bank as the jury found in Parker’s favor after a collision on the road south of Patterson Avenue. Parker’s lawyers were Warren Smock and William Pintard of Red Bank. Beta Fertilizer's lawyers defended the case. Parker warned 20 acquaintances, including Michael Corbet, before the crash on April 12 as a touring car driven by William Hartisman of Eatontown struck Parker’s vehicle. no injuries were reported. The defendants offered no settlement and suggested Parker drop the matter.

Councilman's Son Dead After brief illness

Four year old Leo Beatty son of Councilman and Mrs. Thomas Beatty died at 11 30 this morning after a four day illness with quinsy sore throat. He had been seen riding with his father and was fondly regarded by eight surviving siblings. Funeral arrangements to be announced. Tomorrow in Narant Day.

Licenses Granted and Refused in Freehold Session

Judge John KB presided in Freehold as 141 licenses were granted 8 laid over and 2 refused. The Lenox Hotel application was refused. Long Branch and nearby licensees include Monmouth County Horse Show and many Long Branch firms. The judge warned against screening and public nuisance practices at hotels and urged removal of obstructive decor and screens.

Red Bank Council Approves Arches Street Lighting Plan

The Red Bank mayor and council in regular session agreed to light River Street with arches. Fifteen arches to be erected on Broad Street, six on Monmouth Street, four on Front Street, with a five year lighting contract if successful. An ordinance to lay sidewalks on Bergen Place was adopted and street maintenance plans approved. Bills totaling $9,000 including fire tower and houses final payments were paid before adjourning.
