Ford confirmed by exact vote in New Jersey Senate
Governor Wilson refused to withdraw Princeton professor Henry James Ford for Banking and Insurance Commissioner. The New Jersey Senate confirmed him by a narrow vote after a lengthy caucus, with four Republicans backing Ford. Eleven votes secured the confirmation, while several Republicans absented themselves. The fight centered on Ford's solvency and residency, with critics arguing he lacks proper qualifications, and supporters citing his credentials. Commissioner Lewis denied involvement in schemes to block Ford. The term begins April 15.
