25 DROWNED WHEN LINER COLLIDES WITH BARK AND SINKS

London reports a collision at East Bourne between the Peninsula and Oriental Liner Oceana and the German bark Pigugua. Twenty five passengers drowned. all aboard rescued after a small lifeboat capsized. The Oceana carried five million dollars in specie and sank an hour after a hole was rammed in the port side. Weather clear. cause unknown. Panicked passengers and rough exit as boats lowered. Miss Ida Wiederholt hosted a gathering in Sycamore Avenue last night. Overseer Frank J. Manson, Red Bank, will travel to Boston for a short pleasure trip.

Lay Conference Honors Bennett at Asbury Park Meeting

At the Laymen's Association of the New Jersey Methodist Conference gathering in Asbury Park, Harry P. Bennett was chosen as one of five lay representatives for the New Jersey Center at the General Conference in Minneapolis next May. William Child of Red Bank also elected. The association adopted a new constitution and urged delegates to back a time limit on pastors and equal lay representation in annual conferences. Bishop Berry noted a bishop already granted lay privilege and warned against extending calls to ministers.

Red Bank women entertained Mrs. Edmund Wilson wife of the attorney general at McLaren Street Red Bank Wednesday afternoon. About two guests attended and a pleasant social hour followed with games. Read Bank Royal Arcanum Holds March Meeting

At Read Bank Council No. 984 Royal Arcanum in Red Bank Henry Norman Hoyt of Oakland Street was initiated. Five new applications were received and investigating committees were named by Regent Harry L. Martin. Coronal Council of Keyport paid a fraternal visit of ten members. Refreshments followed a social hour with dominoes and pinochle. Visitors departed on the last Keyport car at midnight. The annual domino and pinochle tournament will begin at the next meeting March 28 and run about ten weeks with prizes for victors.

Whitney Quartet Makes Big Hit In Weather Hit Show

Despite rain a large audience greeted the Whitney brothers in the Pop war Course entertainment by the Long Doranth Teachers association. The program featured German English and American music with explanations. Edwin M Whitney gave readings including Pro and Con and an imitation of a boy at his first public appearance. Past High Priests Night Celebrated by Standard Chapter

Standard Chapter No. 45, R. A. M. at Masonic Hall held Past High Priests Night with three Royal Arch degree candidates. About 50 Masonry members attended as Norris of Goodwin Chapter and Parsons of Hiram Chapter joined visiting dignitaries from Staten Island and Red Bank. A repair was served after the meeting. the chapter notes include a past grand high priest of New Jersey among its long active members. Mrs. Jacob N. Primary petitions for commissioner race surge with candidates

This morning about thirty petitions were filed for the new commissioner election under the revised government. Nine candidates have already surpassed the required number, including City Clerk B B Newcomb and Comptroller Frank J Nowland, with others ranging 1 to 23 petitions. Sidewalk caved on Norwood Avenue prompting immediate fencing

A section of the sidewalk along the Curtis property on Norwood Avenue collapsed yesterday afternoon creating a dangerous pedestrian passage. The area was promptly fenced off pending repairs due to the cave in from heavy haline. The incident prompted local safety measures.

Frank Dalton Dies After Illness In Brighton Avenue Home

Frank Dalton longtime hotel figure in the city died at his Brighton avenue home at four o'clock yesterday afternoon after a two week illness. He had suffered nervous and heart trouble linked to an automobile accident years earlier and had gradually declined since a recent fire in West Hub. Born February 12 1808 in Jersey City, he was the son of Robert J and Rosa mund Dalton and once ran a Goose Neck property with boating access before settling into hotel work. Continued on Sixth.
