New Jersey Patronage Hinge On Taft Brings Briggs More Help

The end of Senators Kean and Howell terms shifts federal patronage control in the Third District to Senator Briggs. Robert Carson has held Perth Amboy Port Collector for thirteen years, with Kean’s backing expected for reappointment, but Taft’s renomination may favor Briggs as Theodore Strong backs William Pfeiffer of Perth Amboy. A decision is anticipated soon, possibly by April 4.

Ocean Grove bill passes Assembly by wide margin

In Trenton on March 7 the Ocean Grove borough measure cleared the Assembly 59 to 18 after a partisan debate between Assemblymen Taylor and Hendrickson of Monmouth. Taylor led for the bill promoting self government for about three thousand residents, while Hendrickson argued for preserving a religious resort under existing Camp Meeting Association control. The vote reflected strong Democratic support with some Republicans backing the bill.

Rejected bids for Oceanport school project

Oceanport Board of Education opened bids for a new school and lot with a $14,000 appropriation plus $600 lot cost. The board set a $12,500 maximum for building after land and fees. All bids from $13,700 to $16,800 were rejected. lowest bid was Denison of Perth Amboy. The board will revise laws and readvertise, aiming to build within the limit with plan changes.

The Coleman House at Asbury Park sold by Frank B. Conover to Mrs. A. M. Sexton, Marl borough owner and two year lessee, with an estimated price near $200,000. Mobilization ordered along Mexican border in March surge

Secretary Dickinson directs deployment of nearly 20,000 U S troops to the border within five days. Fifteen infantry regiments four cavalry regiments two field artillery regiments and two coast artillery regiments are to move. Armored cruisers Washington Tennessee Montana and West Virginia will rush to the Texas coast for joint army navy maneuvers at San Antonio Galveston and San Pedro. Washington reports the resignation of Interior Secretary Richard Ballinger, announced by President Taft. Walter L. Fisher of Chicago is named as successor after Ballinger released a second resignation letter. Long Branch Marksmen Lead International Trap Meeting at Madison Square

Long Branch marksmen were first to score at the International Trap Shooters Association meeting in Madison Square Garden under New York Sportsmen Show auspices. Attendees included Howland, H. C.
