Sailor recounts perilous sea voyage in ice bound sloop
Captain Edward Burlew, sole occupant of the Lydia Van Name, was towed into Keyport harbor after a treacherous voyage. The ice bound craft washed to sea, froze midwinter, and nearly swamped, with Burlew surviving days at sea before rescue by Captain Hiney and arrival at Sandy Hook. The Lyceum hosted the third annual masquerade ball by the Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society drawing nearly 700 attendees. Costumes ranged from fancy to grotesque as dancers filled the floor and visitors from nearby towns observed the event. Wilson protests over borough township tax split
At a Red Bank Mayor and Council meeting Attorney General Edmund Wilson challenged bills for the same Harrison avenue lots in both borough and Shrewsbury township. He also objected to a duplicate dog tax. Assessor Ivins explained the four lots straddle the borough boundary, front in the borough and rear in the township. The matter was referred to Ivins and Wilson to resolve the split and refund the excess $10.70.

Veto Sustained In Engine Installation Controversy
Acting Mayor Henry Joline presiding officer of the City Council had his first veto last night on a Seagrave Company engine install proposition for the automobile hose wagon. The veto was sustained, with solicitor Slocum's opinion noting enforcement if the engine fails to meet contract requirements. The fire and water committee and city solicitor were urged to adjust. An invitation from the Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society to their annual ball was accepted. Building Inspector Cranmer warned that the Pach building on Brighton Avenue remains unsafe after winter fires and should be torn down. Firemen's exempt certificates were granted to John Goodwin Joseph Alberto and Samuel Adams at the request of the Hiberon Engine Company.
