Coal Price Flows From Mines To Consumers Amid Rail Monopoly
The article argues that railroad control of freight rates keeps coal prices high, claiming if competition were freer, anthracite could be $3 per ton cheaper in many areas. It breaks down coal cost into mine price freight and retail charge, and cites figures from 1912 showing mine car prices around $2.74 to $4.18 per ton for various coal types, noting minimal price variation among major coal firms. The piece contends major rail-linked producers like Pennsylvania Coal, Lehigh Valley Coal, and Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron align pricing, with mining plus fixed charges estimated near $2.85 per ton.
