Wireless Saves Lampasas Passengers From Stranded Ship

Rescue ships answered wireless calls to aid the Mallory liner Lampasas after it ran aground near Middle Grounds south of the Tortugas. San Jacinto lowered lifeboats and saved all aboard, followed by the revenue cutter Miami which freed the vessel.

Man 15 Run Down by Cyclist in Snowbound Incident

An elderly man named John Kirby was struck by a bicycle rider in Martin Avenue during a snowstorm. Kirby fell hard, injured his right arm, and was helped up as the cyclist sped away, with near-miss injuries to the rider.

Phillips Arrested on Indictment at Broadway Theatre

Harvey M. Phillips manager of the Broadway Theatre was arrested by Detective Captain Walling on an indictment charging a disorderly house for Sunday shows. Odd Fellows Hold Triple Installation Night in Long Branch

Odd Fellows staged an unusual event at Odd Fellows Hall with eight lodges installed at one meeting in three hours. Grand Lodge officers F Howard Bay and B Lippincott attended along with Rebekah leaders and Mrs Grate Gregory. The Arioch Rebekah Lodge No 21 installed new officers including Noble Grand Florgita Van Cleaf and Vice Grand Lizzie Ringleben. Deputy Grand Patriarch Hyer presided as Long Branch Ep No 49 members welcomed the event.

Farmers to Fight Proposed Wheel Tax in New Jersey

Trenton Jan 17 Farmers across the state plan strong protest against a proposed wheel tax to pay for road repairs. Agriculturists say farm wagons with wide tires cause little damage while high speed autos ruin roads. A $1 per wheel yearly tax could cost farmers twenty to fifty dollars annually, adding to existing taxes. The state funds for road upkeep rose to 1.47 million dollars last year with hundreds of miles improved and more new miles planned.

In Freehold New Jersey Frederick Crum of Syracuse bequeathed an extra 500 to his father Richard Crum's will while appointing Maria Crum executrix. The elder Crum left 1,500 to two daughters Adelaide and Delia and 2,000 to his son. The matter, witnessed by John H. Brown and Levi Tower, follows Maria Crum's appointment as beneficiary.
