Rabbi Stephen S. Wise of New York delivered an eloquent lecture on civic religion at the Intermedial School auditorium. He urged a revival of spiritual patriotism to meet urban civic life challenges and urged Americans to serve the state with conscience as citizens.
Dr. Harry Neafie of Freehold called by Coroner Morris to examine the death of William T. Cobb. No autopsy planned. They also probed Mrs. Sarah B. Still aged 66 who died of apoplexy at Pine Brook. A nephew found the scene after doors were locked and a two year old girl remained inside. Township collector Harry G. Van Note and lawyer Joseph M. Turner named to Senate clerical posts. Elizabeth Warwick of Fifth Avenue ill with measles. Mrs. M. L. Johnson traveled to Philadelphia for her daughter’s operation at Howard Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Parker visiting Washington at the New Willard. Grand Theatre advert promotes matinee and evening showings.
Trenton January 16 The Assembly met after organization and passed the Senate bill legalizing certain legislative officers and carried on the incidental bill. It received 35 bills and 4 joint resolutions. Committees will begin meetings next Monday to consider the measures, including the Governor’s Jury reform, constitutional convention, Moore poll tax repeal, Zisgen Board of Freeholders overhaul, Bredenbek Sunday saloon hours, and Richards court reform. Two local bowling teams, Young Men's Catholic Club and Knights of Columbus, each hold two wins after four matches. A handsome cup will be awarded to the series winner after ten games. Probable players include Carlton Warwick, Martin McCue Jr., Janes Walsh, Edward Walsh, and George Rafferty for YMCC and A Sieco, Edward Travers, Michael Leonard, Charles Beatty, and Howard Burns for KO C. The YMCC will host Star of the Sea parish members and invite guests.
One of the finest campfires held by the James B. Morris Post No. 43 G A R was at the home of Mr and Mrs Albert T Duryee White street last night. Lawrence G B Newman celebrated his sixty seventh birthday and hosted the event. Guests included G A R members their wives and others. Rev A H Eberhardt opened with a prayer then A S Cordley gave a strong address. George B Stratton and William Cobb were lamented as recently deceased. The Duryees furnished a grand setting with flags and patriotic decor. The program featured G A R talks a Duryee solo recitations by Wingert sisters and Beatrice Coleman and music by Joe J Morriss orchestra.
Israel Feldman known as Paper Hall dies at home on Fourth Avenue in Long Branch after a year of ill health. He was over eighty and survived by a widow and one daughter. Interment was in Orthodox burying ground. Feldman moved to Long Branch over twenty years ago joining the Broadway Ark Indicate. He built a mobile stage business with modest beginnings and later improved with better horses and equipment.
State Commissioner of Schools Calvin Kendall from Preston arrives in Long BRatel to deliver the dedicatory address for the new inter medial school on Morris Avenue tonight at eight. City Superintendent Mrs Christopher Gregory hosts the event with County Superintendent John Upright and the Morris Avenue staff attending as speakers and ushers.
The Piremen's Ke mpt Association plans a smoker at Library Hall on the evening of the 2ird with a three piece orchestra and Emil Clogs of Brooklyn as entertainer. Prominent members will give remarks, and pipes with weed will be provided as they prepare for the May state convention.
Vice Chancellor W M Lewis confirms the Edwards Lumber and Coal Co properties sale with J Kamrass acquiring the mill and machinery for 6250 dollars and Elizabeth C Norton purchasing the Broadway hardware store for about 15000 dollars. Georgia land goes to J Edward Wartman of Asbury Park for 10 dollars.
London reports that a formal note from the Ambassadors to the Porte will state that the powers cannot prevent Turkey's complete overthrow. Balkan peace envoys suspend action until the Porte's reply is received, following their governments' cautious stand.
Harry Reddington of New Monmouth pleaded guilty to atrocious assault and battery and highway robbery. He received not less than seven nor more than fifteen years at hard labor in State's prison. Reddington attacked Morgan Wright near dusk, stole a silver watch valued at $25, and was captured by local officers Ellwood Minagh and William Chandler after a tip and a setup by Wright.
Long Branch Council No. 429 Royal Arcanum celebrates thirty three years with an open meeting at Masonic Hall Broadway and Rockwell avenue Tuesday at seven. Past Grand Regent Theodore Clash delivers the address while Past Regent Henry Joline presides. Invitations go to members and about one hundred guests with entertainment from Star Lyceum Bureau and refreshments after.
The fight to incorporate Ocean Grove as a borough resumes with a public hearing set for Monday at 3 pm before the Assembly on Boroughs and Borough Commissions. Opponents led by Doctor Anton E Ballard, 98, of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, will press the measure amid a heated dispute over church status and political control.
The State Board of Public Utility Commissioners allows Johnson trolley to raise the fare from ten to fifteen cents with three fare zones between Trenton and Princeton. Block tickets of twelve for $1 become valid between Lawrenceville and either Trenton or Princeton. A five cent single fare applies within each zone. The rise reflects higher wages and material costs for rehabilitation. The company is under receivership.
Uncle John M. Cutler of Pecan Grove marks his 108th birthday amid frailty and memory of Brooklyn horse life. He lies bed-fast at 62 Abbott Avenue with Mrs. Elizabeth Reilly as caregiver. The obituary-like note mentions his Civil War service and lifelong abstinence from liquor and tobacco.
Mrs Mintle J Reynolds secretary of the joint State Legis Hye Committee spoke to the Red Bank Laval Suffrage League at Borough hall yesterday. She argued that equal suffrage works, citing state histories and border proximity, and announced two new members joined the league John Crosby and Mrs John Crosby. A Sunday Empire theatre talk in Red Hawk is planned with speaker Mrs Crosby.
