Trenton January 3 There was an increase of 469 in the number of corporations chartered in New Jersey last year The total for 1909 was 8 118 compared with 1 649 in the prior year The state revenues from corporations rose to 187 717 33 from 148 387 25 in 1908 an increase of 39 330 00 percent
James Guire of the Brighton avenue feed business left for Los Angeles with his wife as his condition worsened. His brother James Guire and John Guire earlier traveled west for health. doctors warn against travel. Mrs Guire remains prostrated as the family awaits his potential return and further medical advice.
The cornerstone for Oakhurst M E Church was laid with service in the basement chapel. Rev Dr John Handley and Rev H A Relyea led prayers, with Pastor C B Fisher present. A time capsule sealed the history of the church and deeds. Completion rushes ahead with dedicatory services slated for early next year, weather permitting.
A special committee of the City Council met at the Atlantic fre house to inspect its condition. They found the building in bad repair with decayed floors beams and supports and expect substantial work. The inspector will assess the structure and report recommendations to Councilmen Qubm Stratton and Beatty.
A note expresses gratitude to friends for support during illness and after the death of a son. Special thanks to Rev Dr Smallwood and others for flowers. Also mentions Jacob Steinbach closing time for his wallpaper business and a personal offer from A F Golden at 579 Broadway.
A meeting of the Monmouth County Agricultural Fair Association at Red Bank Thursday elected twenty five directors. The treasurer reported the association in good financial condition with 197 shares of stock represented. New directors include Melvin A. Rice John H. The thirty fourth annual ball of the Atlantic Fire Engine and Truck Company was held at the Lyceum last Friday evening with J Pitman West's orchestra. A large gathering attended. twenty four dances were listed. Committees on floor, reception, and arrangement were named including Arthur Hennessey and Frank Griffith and many others.
Members of the Elberon Horticultural Society host a social event at Townleys Hall on Wednesday evening January 6th at 8 o'clock. Euchre gaming and dancing featured with refreshments. tickets are on sale through members as a large gathering is anticipated and music will be provided.
George Albert Dorsey who died December 28 in Springdale was buried Sunday. Services were held at Second Baptist Church with Rev. Asbury Smallwood officiating. Interment followed at White Ridge cemetery, under the direction of William H. Morris Jr. funeral director.
John Britton two weeks old son of Mr and Mrs William H Riddle of Chelsea avenue died Saturday morning from stomach trouble. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon by Rev Dr J G Reed with burial under Hyer and Flock. Monmouth County Fair Association property transfers to Freehold Driving Association under an Orphans Court order dated December 16. A mortgage from 1858 remains but is reduced to 1500 and will be cancelled. Price paid and stock sales fund working capital around 1200. First public meeting set for May 30, 1910.
The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders re elected the same officers except for county collector Asa Francis of Long Branch chosen at 2500 dollars yearly to replace Dem holdover. William B. Conover became director. George W. Patterson Jr. is clerk at 60 dollars monthly. Halstead H. Wainwright counsel at 400 yearly. William R. Stevens auditor at 800 yearly. William Sykes janitor 65 monthly. William Reynolds engineer 80 monthly. Dr Harvey H. Brown jail physician 100 monthly. Forman Barkalow assistant engineer 50 monthly. A Goose Neck bridge reconstruction plan was approved with widening and a footpath. Next, the bulkhead between Sea Bright and Highlands will be inspected for damage.
The 1910 city council began work with six new members taking oaths before City Clerk Newcomb. The first meeting lasted eighteen minutes, appointing seats and committees, and the mayor’s message was referred to committees. The next regular session is planned for tonight. Ocean Township and Packer's Hall updates follow with new officials and committee assignments for Shropshire's borough.
Snow furries tonight or Tuesday with much colder conditions and brisk northwesterly winds. A physician moved offices to Hicks Hotel Broadway due to increased practice and reports that patients benefit from a new scientific treatment method.
Machinery harvest starts at Frank Dennis pond covering about twenty five acres with ice nine inches thick. Estimated one cutting yields 18000 to 20000 tons, employing 126 to 160 men. Potential daily output 3000 tons, aiming to clear pond in a little over a week, cost 12 to 16 cents per ton. Dennis expects a strong crop after poor previous years.
The 1909 election year saw 1,862 districts use ballots for constitutional amendments. The Division of Election notes thirty-five special elections under the 1908 act on voting machines, with 2 machines retained and 33 rejected. General election machines numbered 110. Connecticut and other states move toward reforms. New Jersey and a few states still use ballots outside booths. In other items, Miss Leah Kline won a piano via coupon marketing. a Hassenpfeffer supper is planned at the Rockwell Hotel with limited tickets. store hours adjusted and other local notices appear.
In his fourth annual message to the Long Branch City Council Mayor McFaddin announces the city’s floating debt has been wiped out in 1909. He explains the high tax rate, cites fixed charges and debt interest, and urges economy and council supervision of the tax duplicates to achieve moderation in future appropriations.
Mr and Mrs William F B Norton celebrated their twenty fifth anniversary with seventy five relatives and friends at their Monmouth road home. Rev B Fisher officiated and a musical program followed before a luncheon and gifts of silverware and glassware. The couple, married January 1 1885, have four children surviving and were joined by many local guests including Rev C B Fisher and numerous Norton relatives.
