Two little girls injured in traffic accidents

Edna Green, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Green of Columbus place, was struck by a horse and sleigh on Broadway opposite Lippincott avenue while crossing from the sidewalk after school. The horse, driven by William Van Schoick and accompanied by Dr William H Slocum, toppled the sleigh and both occupants were thrown. Edna survived with bruises and shock, while another child, Marjorie Howland, was injured in a sleigh collision yesterday afternoon. William Klem signed a three year umpire contract with National League president Thomas Lynch for 1912 13 and 14, becoming the first major league umpire guaranteed for more than one year.

Justice Marriage Bill Passes House Shifting Status

In Trenton on February 8 the House passed a bill removing the right of justice of the peace to perform marriages. Six opposed, 38 for, with 16 absent or dodging. Lakewood Edges Chattle In Tough High School Battle

Lakewood High defeated Chattle 30 to 24 after a hard fought game marked by a disputed foul called against Chattle and refereeing by Osborne. Lakewood pulled away late as Chattle pressed the pace in the second half but could not overcome the halftime deficit.

Lockwoods Return From Metropolis Nine Week Visit

Captain Nelson Lockwood of Galilee and Mrs Lockwood returned home after nine weeks in New York and Brooklyn. In Brooklyn they stayed with daughter Mrs Harry Matherson. The Galilee fisherman enjoyed sights of the metropolis while leaving cares at home with no interruptions to their pleasure.

Three years for attacking girl in Red Bank case

Robert VanBrunt, recently convicted of assault and battery with intent on Elizabeth Morley in Red Bank on October 13, was sentenced by Judge Foster in Freehold to a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven. VanBrunt admitted prior state prison terms. The court commented on a supposed mania for attacking girls and young women and warned against future deception.

Advocates Workhouse Law At County Conference

At a Red Bank meeting of the State Children’s Aid officials and Overseers of the Poor a three member committee discussed establishing a County Home for the Aged with annex for ill inmates. They plan a self supporting facility and to assess local needs and costs. A Labor Law to compel unemployed offenders to work county roads was proposed to fund costs and support families.

21st Annual Best of All Charity Ball for Hospital

The Auxiliary Novi hosted the twenty first annual charity ball at the Lyceum in Long Branch to benefit Monmouth Memorial Hospital. Nearly two hundred couples attended as arc lights and Woodland garden decorations dazzled the hall. The augmented orchestra led by Prof West played with acclaim, and the grand march was led by Mr. and Mrs. C Henry Irwin and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Cubberley. After a midnight supper the dancing continued into the early hours. The first charity ball was held at Central Hotel, the site of the hospital, twenty two years ago. The events have raised thousands of dollars, with receipts as high as four hundred dollars in a single year.

Family Furnishings Tax Exemption Passed in Assembly

Would Make Council President Mayor

In Trenton on February 8 the House split along party lines over Assemblyman Ten Broeck's bill. It would name the president of the Common Council acting Mayor with full mayoral powers when the mayor is absent. Democrats resisted a change to the old vice president rule, but Republicans pushed the measure on second reading, aiming to resolve Perth Amboy succession issues.
