Inland Waterway Campaign Launched For Atlantic Coast

A coastal campaign organized Saturday by representatives from Long Branch to Atlantic Highlands aims to secure a $166,000 state appropriation to buy right of way for an inland waterway from South Carolina to Maine. William K. Blodgett of Point Pleasant chairs the committee and a publicity drive will educate the public on benefits for the state and inland commerce.

Long Branch Fire Department Yearly Report

Long Branch hearings reveal 473 volunteers with 15 paid staff in the fire department for the year 1916. Losses total about 20 000 with insurance of 48 540, and 49 fires en route. Blizzard Toll and Rail Disruptions Hit Northeast

New York reports one dead two dying and thirty seven hospitalized from a triple blizzard. Laborer Patrick Gleason died of exposure while Stanley Giermack and Francisco Manila were struck by a halto truck and a streetcar respectively. The storm waned but more blizzards threaten the Midwest and Atlantic states with widespread travel paralysis and heavy snow across rail lines and roads.

Reinstatement Bid For Atlantic Fire Company Presented

City Council heard a plan to reinstate the Atlantic Fire Engine and Truck Company. Lawyer Thomas P. Fay stated no definite timetable but indicated the Atlantics may form an independent group, acquire a lot and rebuild equipment after disputes over a new hose wagon and removal from the city firehouse.

Pier modification eyed for Long Branch project plan

Lawyer Thomas Po Fay and Samuel R Rosoff attended the City Council meeting to push an ordinance changing pier specifications from 150 feet wide to 75 feet for the Long Branch Pier and Land project now partly erected. Rosoff showed a drawing and a contract with a Venetian band for two daily concerts. If adopted, the plan would let the contractor complete the pier at its present width with work progressing toward an early completion. Favorable comment noted as the contractor advances and boats likely to run next summer. Caught 1400 hard crabs. Joseph Williams of Port Monmouth dredging for clams in Sandy Hook Bay Friday collected over 1,400 hard crabs, sold at Red Bank for 25 cents a dozen.

Mrs Elizabeth Hastmond widow of the late Frank Hastmond is 78. She hosted a family gathering with children and twenty three grandchildren in attendance. The Red Bank District Democratic Club meets Thursday at its headquarters in the Patterson Building.

1911 City Budget Passed By Council At $204861

Little prigress in the legislature

In Trenton the legislature saw little action. The Senate passed bill No. 8 on primaries to congressmen by a 19 to 1 vote. Nominees from the Governor were named for the Court of Errors and Appeals and several courts, sent to committees. Assembly actions included recommittals and reconsiderations on tax and gun licensing measures.

New York Telephone seeks street openings for conduits

An application from the New York Telephone Company to open streets for conduit extensions was received and ordered filed. A public hearing on the petition is set for City Hall Monday evening in March at 8 o'clock.

Fire Alarm Whistle Suggested for Gasny Plant

A whistle may be installed at the Gonsoli dated Gasny plant to replace or supplement the fire alarm and summon firefighters. The fire and water committee will consider the proposal as part of ongoing safety discussions. An upcoming YMCA conference at Townley Hall will include reports from committees on ongoing association work.

Railroad right of way sought to drain Chelsea Ave

L W Berry of the New York and Long Branch Railroad notified the city it can obtain a right of way over railroad property to lay a 12 inch main from Chelsea avenue to the brook to relieve surface water overflow at the corner of Pourti and Chelsea avenues. The railroad submitted an agreement revocable on sixty days notice to be executed by the city. Chelsea avenue residents have long sought a solution to the standing surface water problem.

Clams Stolen From Port Monmouth Dealer

William Dennis of Port Monmouth reports the loss of about 150 bushels of hart clams from his storage beds during last week. The theft occurred while he was away, leaving an estimated $300 loss. Townspeople and nearby farmers reportedly took advantage of low water to clamming near the beds.
