The State Highway Commission approved a 1912 plan outlining 1,489 miles for state control with 1,210 miles already improved. The report calls for surveying all routes before taking over roads, requests funds for plotting, maintenance, and repair, and notes Gov. Wilson's approval and a push to relieve counties of highway maintenance burdens.
The New Jersey Mortgage and Trust Company directors met for organization and elected officers. Augustus Chandler as president, Samuel B. Scobey and C Asa Francis as vice presidents, Anthony Z. Woolley as secretary and treasurer, Arthur C. Morris as assistant secretary and treasurer, with Jor H. C. Morford as counsel. A dividend of 3 percent was declared for the six months ending February 28, 1913.
The Board of Commissioners approved first reading of ordinances for permanent street improvements on Second Third and Rockwell avenues and opening West End Court. Residents petitioned for water mains extension. the request was sent to Parks and Public Improvements. City finances showed receipts and expenditures for January.
A collision at 8 35 this morning between a Jersey Central Traction construction car and a R R freight train at Hopping's Crossing Middletown township left three injured. The freight train was drilling at hopping's grave pits when the trolley car passed directly in front of the locomotive. (Continued on Sixth Page.) Lincroft Boy Scouts meet tomorrow night to form a boys scout organization led by Mrs. Lewis Thompson of Brookylale Farm.
The Assembly defeated the Nichols bill to appropri ate 35000 to send the National Guard to the inauguration after an amendment required Senate attendance at state expense. The measure was then altered to fund the Acting Governor and staff for the event. Next week may decide whether militia attendance proceeds.
A Long Branch grocery on Central Avenue suffers a second break in as burglars enter through two rear doors leaving burnt matches and damaged stock. Owner J N Vanebaum reports heavy losses and worries about a potential fire from the careless intruders. Police notified as investigation continues.
A strange animal ran amuck yesterday causing chaos as it prowled the streets. It was cornered under a basket and shot after a chaotic chase. One man was bitten and another’s clothing torn during the street scene.
A yellow dog attacked pedestrians and schoolchildren in several city sections causing panic. It bit one man, Weisner of Woolley and Weisner, and was shot by a patrolman after a basket capture near Slocum's. Health officials later planned tests at the state lab while police warned residents to avoid the animal.
The District Court of New Jersey designated Citizens' National Bank of Long Branch as a depository for money in bankruptcy estates. The order, dated January 10, requires bonds of $14,000 and names judges Joseph Cross and John Rellstab as present at the meeting.
Four Sea Bright candidates compete for the postmaster job as Hall Packer’s term ends April 20. Hampton leads a slate including Carl Kemp Eugene Pannaci James A Ryan and Henry L Zobel who endorsed Hampton. Red Bank Elks plan an all-star vaudeville at the New Lyric Theatre on March 10.
David Riddle, convicted two weeks ago in a pedeste tide deal, was sentenced by Judge Poster to not less than three and one half years and not more than seven in state prison. He procured an aged widow, Mrs Martha Po Moore, of Asbury Part, to sign deeds for property and induced another woman to impersonate a man. Moore signed acknowledgments.
The closing session at Plainfield elected officers led by Rev. Walter Reed Hunt of Orange to succeed Dr. Frank Moore as president. Monmouth county delegates and prominent local ladies attended and were named to an advisory committee. The report notes ongoing work and support for a Monmouth county conference renewal, with special mention of notable participants and invitations for local engagement.
President nominates Red Bank postmaster ending factional fight. Local Republicans back Sweeney while Democrats seek borough collectorship. Thompson could become postmaster if appointed, reshaping balance in the local office.
