Ex-Chief Van Benthuysen reports 1911 fire losses and needs

Long Branch Fire Department ex chief Lewis Van Benthuysen presented the 1911 annual report to City Council showing 62 fire alarms with 2 false alarms and an estimated fire loss of 72075 dollars. He urges private alarm boxes at Monmouth Memorial Hospital and public schools, a box at Broadway and Myrtle, a Boston shutoff for each hose company, a team for Byron Engine Company, and apparatus for Atlantic Fire Company. The report lists department supplies and was referred to the fire and water committee.

Poor Overseers Organize County Children Aid Branch

Monmouth county overseers of the poor plan a meeting at Red Bank to form a county branch of the New Jersey State Children's Aid Society with about thirty members. Street Commissioner Kiernan presents January 1912 activities to the City Council. He lists repairs on Ocean Avenue Third Avenue and Liberty Street, filling holes near trolley tracks, water main bursts, and crosswalk maintenance. Snowstorms limited further repairs. crosswalks and gutters were cleared and sanded. He notes a need for a shed to house water wagons and road equipment and suggests an addition to protect city property.

Fractured Wrist Cranking Machine Injures Norwood Man

The United States Weather Bureau predicts fair weather in New Jersey tonight and Wednesday with light warming. Data from Long Branch shows a high yesterday of 23, low last night 11, current 14, and an 8 a.m. rise of plus 8 in temperature. Humidity at 8 a.m. is 82 percent and at 10 a.m. 71 percent. Wind from the west at 20 miles per hour with a peak 46 mph yesterday. Barometer 29.96 inches. Weather contrasts with last year’s snow storm.

Shrewsbury Townsfolk Jump From Window To Escape Fire

A small blaze at the Old Tavern House on the Allen property in Shrewsbury caused a family to flee from a second story window. Patrick A Hearn and family escaped as Mrs. A Hearn hurled the children to safety and leaped out herself. Harold Cleland Jr, a 15 year old, aided in extinguishing the flames and received praise for his actions.

Improvement of Second Avenue Set for Immediate Work

The city street committee and trolley company officials agreed to push forward with Second Avenue improvements as soon as weather allows. The neglected street will receive a gravel coating and new erecting work after the trolley company repaired its roadbed. Public notice.

County bonifaces to be guests of Charles W Jones proprietor of the Grand View Hotel at Fair Haven Friday night. Guests from Long Branch Red Bank Asbury Park Freehold Keyport and others attend. Tinton Falls Woman Dies Suddenly at 79

Mrs. Emeline Wemple, 79, wife of the late Josie Wemple, a longtime Tinton Falls resident, died suddenly about 3 a.m. from valvular heart trouble. Coroner Pay of Red Bank issued a burial permit after the death at her home. Survived by a daughter Fannie and three sons, funeral services set for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the residence, with interment in Cat’s Neck cemetery.

Mother and child die in alleged medical neglect

Mrs. Jane Elisa Van Brunt of Pearl Street died at 2:30 this morning after seeking a doctor for a delicate condition. The mother and unborn child perished while waiting for medical attendance, with coroner Wm. H. Morrin Jr. criticizing the physician for failing to respond and considering an inquest.

Mrs Joline Fractures Wrist In Apartment Mishap

Revival Services End at St Luke's M E Church

Revival services begun in January at St Luke's M E Church concluded Sunday night. Gospel singer Frank Fitzgerald performed and selected pieces.
