Chicken supper hosted by Woman's Bible Class at Simpson Church

Seventy diners gathered in the Simpson Memorial Methodist Church banquet room for an old fashioned chicken supper led by Rev. Alfonso Dave as toastmaster. Clayton Sentenced to Chair After Night Jury Deliberation

Justice Voorhees in Freehold sentenced Charles L. Clayton of Asbury Park to die in the electric chair the week of March 11 after a jury found him guilty of first degree murder in the December 10 Lippincott killing. Clayton, silent at sentencing, had sought a new trial while being escorted to jail. The jury, after a long deliberation, returned the guilty verdict following questions on premeditation and murder degrees.

Public meeting on paving and trolley plans in city hall

Lamy Beats Wood In Skating Races

Saranac Lake New York February 1 Lamy of Saranac Lake beat Morris Wood of Long Branch to claim the professional skating title after three races in a continuing series. Lamy took the half mile and two mile events while Wood won the quarter mile. Close finishes marked the day with Wood showing sprint strength and Lamy edging ahead in the stretch for the tape. Eight commission bills dominate Trenton session

Trenton February 1 eight bills on commission government have been introduced this session to extend the system to counties and cities. Assembly No 37 by Gill provides nine to three member boards per county by population and is direct act with no referendum. Other measures regulate county elections and allow ranked voting for commissioners.

Chief Layton reported from Capt Carroll of the Newark police that two Long Branch girls were captured in Newark. Margaret Brown, 16, of Branchport avenue, and Mary Morrie, 17, of Edwards avenue, were identified and their parents informed. The girls had left home last Sunday week with unknown destination, and their recent whereabouts were a mystery.

Grafonola Recital at First Presbyterian Church

Under the Social Union the Grafonola Recital will be held Friday evening at First Presbyterian Church with selections from grand operas performed by renowned artists. Medical inspector resigns from old Board of Education

Seven of the nine members met last night to close affairs. Dr Walter Reed resigned as medical inspector and Dr H B Shaw was elected his successor. The old board will hand over to the new board and assist. A statement opposing parts of the inspector's report will be prepared.

Championship Boat Races Set by Red Bank Clubs

North Shrewsbury and South Shrewsbury Yacht Clubs prepare for the Third Class Championship Pennant races on ice at Red Bank, with two boats from each club and two crew per boat. Notable boats named include Edward Asay's Laisy and Commodore Grant Morford's Tyro. Races to be best two of three, positions may be in cockpit or on the runner plank.

Ocean Grove seeks shared governance with Association

Trenton reports that offers for Ocean Grove residents to elect twenty six representatives to join twenty six Association members in governing the Grove will not be accepted. Assemblyman Taylor, author of a prior incorporation bill, notes action in the Senate is uncertain but expects eventual passage. Rev Dr E A Ballard denies urging the plan yet acknowledges possible leasehold challenges and the debate continues in the legislature.

New Commissioners of Deeds On Tuesday

Trenton February 1 New Jersey suffragettes who seek a state office may obtain one next Tuesday if they can get their names to the Legislature and votes. The office in question is Commissioner of Deeds a state berth women have filled for years. There are more than 2000 Commissioners of Deeds in the state and several women among the holders. Counties listing commissioners include Atlantic Burlington Camden Cape May Cumberland Gloucester Hudson Hunterdon Mercer Middlesex Morris Ocean Passaic Pembroke Somerset Union Warren. Only a few women’s terms expire this year but many male terms do, allowing women to be elected if the Legislature selects them. The election will proceed with two houses voting. nominees are named by counties and the governor appoints the official. The Monmouth county list shows George W.
