Captain Israel J. Merritt dies in New York at eighty two after stomach operation. Born August 28 1820 in the city he began as mule driver on the canal at age ten and later became a Long Island Sound boatman and salvage pioneer of the Merritt Chapman and Company wrecking firm. About seventy five members of the Wong Branch Choral Society met at Library Hall for a business session rehearsal and discussion of membership applications and dues of 60 cents a month.
