Sermon Sets Tone for Catholic Societies Convention

The eleventh annual convention of the American Federation of Catholic Societies opened in Louisville Kentucky with Bishop James A McFaul of Trenton delivering a pontifical mass sermon. He urged Catholics to stand firm against social and religious errors while extending brotherhood to Protestants and other churches. Three million Catholics were represented by delegates from twenty two fraternal and twenty five Catholic organizations and thirty dioceses. Apostolic Delegate Archbishop Giovanni Bonzano celebrated mass and gave blessings as 26000 Catholics joined a parade amid a blazing sun.

New Sidewalk Under Construction At Byron Engine House

A new cement walk is being laid in front of the Oliver Byron engine house to replace a long damaged path. Work began yesterday morning and the engine and hose cart are now in the gapeye of William G. Presley, ready to use once the sidewalk project is complete.

Hazard Takes Son From Long Branch Home Of Mother

A dispute between Rimer Hazard and Pearl White Hazard escalated when Hazard abducted their eight year old son, Wdo ward, from Pearl Hazard’s Long Branch home. Mrs. True, living nearby with the boy, arranged the visit. Hazard and the boy were later seen en route to the Hazard house in Shrewsbury. The matter follows a prior separation suit filed by Pearl Hazard.

Townley Dead Long Branch Resident and Hotel Operator

William B Townley known as Ed Townley died at his Long Branch residence after months of declining health. Born in Elizabeth to William and Jane Townley he lived in Brooklyn earlier, ran a Fulton street hotel, and later spent forty one years in summering at Long Branch He left Monmouth Memorial Hospital three months ago and was funeral services will be held at his home tomorrow night at 7 30 o'clock The body will be shipped to Brooklyn for burial in Greenwood cemetery.

Patrolman Shoots Crushed Dog To End Suffering

Patrolman Kingsland shot a dog at the rear of the Independent engine house after it was badly crushed in a Third avenue automobile accident to relieve its suffering. Becker's Relayed Motion 15 Denied in Rosenthal Case

New York August 20 Judge Mulqueen denied Lieut Becker's motion to inspect Grand Jury notes in the Rosenthal murder case. Sam Schepps traveled from West Side prison to Crimin al Courts Building by taxi as prosecutors prepared for renewed grand jury sessions. The DA Whitman met Schepps and discussed with Rose, Webber and Wallon, saying Schepps would be the grand jury's key witness.

Firemen's Fair Opens in Red Bank Fire House

Union Hose Company of Red Bank opened its annual fair at the Shrewsbury avenue fire house despite bad weather. A large crowd attended to buy goods, enjoy dancing, and visit booths offering groceries candy cake ice cream and drinks. Proceeds help fund uniforms for new members after a hook and ladder apparatus was turned over earlier this year.

One Battleship Settled in Naval Bill Compromise

Washington Aug 20 The House approved the conferees compromise on the Naval Appropriation Bill by 151 to 69 providing for one battleship and sent the measure to the White House.

Jury to pass on Allgor sanity at hearing soon

A jury will soon decide the sanity of James M. Allgor of Sea Bright, now at Prenton State Hospital. The hearing, initially set for Thursday, likely will be postponed to September. New Jersey Women Form Wilson and Marshall League

Trenton August 20 Plans were begun by the new Women s Wilson and Marshall League of New Jersey to organize campaign clubs for the Wilson ticket in every county and municipality. State headquarters will be opened soon for a vigorous campaign. Mrs Caroline B Alexander Hoboken elected president spoke of mobilizing women to support Governor Wilson for the Presidency. Other officers were elected and an executive committee to be appointed from each county. Mrs Alexander noted this as the first New Jersey campaign to view women as political factors. Governor Wilson delivered a message to the women as a large audience listened.

Sea Bright Woman Dies at 62 in Sea Bright Home

Mrs. Robert A. Donaldson aged 62 died at her Sea Bright home yesterday morning after a lengthy illness. Funeral director William J. Morris Jr. of Red Bank is in charge. Lester White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bloomfield White, will soon break ground for a new home on West Park Avenue in Oakhurst, Wilton junction remarks noted. Red Bank sailor Leander Bendy, a former Roberts Boller Works employee, now serves on the battleship Florida anchored at Newport, Rhode Island, visiting Keansburg relatives.

Red Bank Council Reviews Sewer Extension Assessments

At the eight regular meeting the Red Bank Mayor and Council heard the assessment commission report on funding the Bridge avenue sewer extension from Leonard alert to River street and Booth street from Branch avenue to Bergen place. The total cost was 1044 dollars and the total assessment 1716 including 65 for commissioners. South street assessments totaled 42 benefits at 248 each. Bridge avenue had two benefits at 40 each. A public hearing on the report is set for the next regular council meeting on Tuesday night September 3.

Died in Chair Cyrenina Graves of Leonardo

Cyrenina Graves of Leonardo died suddenly at William Browns grocery store and post office in Leonardo at 3 PM Saturday from heart failure. He was 70, born February 22 1842 in Keansburg. He had lived with Wright Anderson of Leonardo for over four years and leaves a half sister Mrs Gertrude Johnson of Locust and an aunt Mars Matilda Graves of Jersey City. Burial permited by Coroner Harry C Fay of Red Bank. Funeral held yesterday at 2 PM at Harry Postens undertaking establishment First Avenue. Interment in Bay View cemetery.

Water sports at Keansburg carnival on the beach

Yesterday afternoon at the Keansburg Carnival motor boat races and water events drew about 5000 spectators to Newpoint Comfort on the board walk and grand stand. Despite rain and clouds the crowds persisted as the sea lay smooth and winds from the southeast favored the racers. Races produced close finishes, giving the crowd lively excitement.

Harvest Home Supper Plans At West Long Branch

West Long Branch church organizes a harvest home supper in a 600 seat tent due to space limits. Mrs Joseph H White aims for 400 tickets by Thursday with 75 sold already. Fishermen's Horse Scare Delays Train Near Tracks

Early morning incident reports Captain Nelson Lockwood's wagon laden with fish nets stalled on a railroad crossing. The horse halted on the tracks as an express approached, but the crew leapt clear and the train stopped about fifty feet away, leaving the scare as the day’s only result.

Monmouth Beach Fire Co Ball Promises Large Turnout

Monmouth Fire Co members anticipate a large attendance at their annual ball to be held in the Monmouth Beach Casino this evening. Prof J Pitman Wiest's orchestra will play. Seven Disorderly House Cases At City Hall

Seven disorderly house cases are listed for tomorrow morning at City Hall. Three arrestees posted bail. four were sent to Freehold jail to await hearing. The four prisoners will be brought here by Constable Setler to be present when names are called.
