Athens reports the King convened a Cabinet and all living former ministers to decide Greece’s stance amid pressure to join the war. He reportedly desires neutrality for now, while France and allies seek explanations from Turkey over Goeben and Breslau.
British fleet in the Mediterranean has orders to strike Austria as war exists since midnight. Admirals in the region to act at once against the Austrian fleet, believed stationed off Pola. Reports say Pola cannot withstand a heavy bombardment by allied ships. a major naval action looms in the Adriatic.
French troops mobilized quickly to confront the German advance as Europe erupts into war. General Joseph Joffre, commander in chief, leads the field with aides while the marching troops rest in a frontier convoy, reflecting decades of Franco-Prussian War grievances.
Mrs Belle L Burke appeared in City Recorder Arrowsmith court on a charge of assault and battery from her stepdaughter Melissa Burke. The complainant described a blow over her eye in a prior encounter and Burke claimed she was the abused party. She was held on $100 bail to await grand jury action.
Rain did not deter crowds at Wayside harvest home where an A-1 supper drew many visitors. The Record notes the menu for tonight promises to be just as inviting or better. Ushers' Union of St. Luke's Church plans a straw-load trip to Wayside.
Mies Clare Magee of Academy is recovering from a nervous breakdown and now able to attend. A regular meeting of the Long Branch Pireméns Bientpl Association will be held August 13th at 8 o clock in City Hall. Women are invited to attend. The midcummer ball of the Chamter Com is set for August 14th with prizes and contests.
Incumbent Mayor Robert M. Hurley and Councilman Archibald L. Miller contest the Democratic primary after Miller resigns from the Democratic Executive Committee to run. Firemen ally with Miller while Hurley’s full-time leadership is noted. Republicans struggle to field a slate with George W Brower targeting William M Thompson for collector and Worthley, Ford, and McQueen named for assessor.
John W. The Epworth League of the Asbury M. B. Church hosted a visitors event with local members including Mike Fishott Mise Military in a short visit. King Tom and others were noted, with guests returning to Harper after the gathering.
A retiring president Mr Deeves was honored at a members only banquet at Wardell's Port-au-Peck Hotel. Dr Edwins succeeded him as toastmaster as Tausic provided music and a multi course dinner was served under Mine Host Wardell's supervision. Souvenirs were distributed amid a festive evening with praise and good will.
Despite a storm, Sea Bright residents attend the third annual dinner at Highland Beach. Judge John R. toastmaster delivers cordial greetings to Borough of Sea Bright, noting past fires in 1891 and 1914 floods. Packer, presenting, lauds active Board of Sea Bright and judges from New York.
