Pen Picture of Resort in 1834
Haruki Korn, researching Long Branch history, uncovers a 1834 portrayal from Gordon’s History of New Jersey describing Long Branch as a sea bathing resort 75 miles from Philadelphia and 45 from New York. It notes attractive accommodations, a gentle shore, fishing, steamboat and stage access, and bustling boarding houses such as Wardell’s Renshaw’s and Len’s with fertile black sand beaches and high sea banks. It also mentions Deal as another watering place and notes current carnival and band events with venues on Broadway and avenues in 19th century Long Branch.
