City Council weighs razing old Broadway Theatre building

At last nights meeting the Broadway Theatre and the idle property of Augustus Layton were discussed as fire and safety concerns. Building inspectors urged condemnation unless compliance with codes. The Howland Hotel, bonfire nuisance, and late night fires were raised, with further action planned.

Robert Johnson of New York visiting Frank Miller’s Oceanic cottage hosted a Southern supper last week for the Misses Enright, charming daughters of James Enright Jr proprietor of the Shrewsbury Inn.

Carnival plans for Jersey coast event largely complete

Over three hundred names have enrolled for next week's carnival with Mrs. W. H. Walsh directing. Divisions include doll coaches, go carts, express wagons, Sunday school, masquerade, floats, ponies, and equestrian. Queen Elsie Steinbach will be crowned Wednesday noon, followed by a parade and the queen’s ball at Stanley House.

Residents Protest Night Noise From Rail Line

Saks avenue cottages and nearby residents complain of engine whistles bells and nighttime noise from the New York and Long Branch railroad. Alexander Pfeiffer leads the protest urging council action to abate the nuisance. The issue is sent to the public utility committee for consideration and possible action by Superintendent Blodgett. Councilman Hobson supports immediate decisive action citing depressed property values.

Red Bank Tennis Tournament at Pearl Street Courts

The Red Bank Y M C A will conduct a tennis tournament for singles and doubles on its Pearl street courts. Entries close Thursday night. Mrs Ellen Hayward of Red Bank has sold property at Leighton avenue and Beach street to Corbin Williams. Sale handled by Thomas A Purtell.

Patten seeks road improvement to Rockwell Avenue

Thomas G. Patten, president of the New York and Long Branch Steam Boat Company, urges city action to repair Rockwell avenue from Atlantic avenue to the company's dock, noting recent opening for a water main worsened condition. The council file awaits the water company's response.

Tag Day Participants Invited to Park Casino Show

Those who helped with the tag day for Monmouth Memorial Hospital and the Long Branch Society for the Improvement of the Poor will attend a 2 pm event at the casino next Thursday featuring a moving picture show polite vaudeville and ice cream and cake. County Assessments and Local Collision Report

County Tax Board met with assessors from various districts to review tax duplicates. Twelve of forty three assessors were absent as a $74,554.00 amount appears continued on the sixth page. A collision on Norwood avenue left J J O Donohue Jr’s car damaged and missing a back wheel after a near-seating with H C Fisher’s vehicle from Asbury Park. Alerts defeated Woodside Field Club 15 to 13 at Hillside grounds with strong hitting and pitching by Hopla and Sweeney.

A Red Bank couple and a colored man were arrested Sunday on adultery charges after a husband reported his wife’s unfaithfulness with John Smith of Red Bank and Mrs. Andrew Griffin of Asbury Park. They posted bail and await grand jury action as the couple’s daughter and a witness testified.

Goldstein’s sale and carnival draw large crowd at Ocean Park

Fire Guts Bijou Theatre in Red Bank Blaze

Three firemen were hurt as a blaze gutted the Bijou theatre interior in Red Bank yesterday afternoon. The theatre and adjoining stores on Broad Street were threatened. the origin remains unknown and electrical power was off. Damaged items included 300 golden oak seats, a highpriced piano, a moving picture machine, curtains, and draperies. Local firefighters and bystanders suffered smoke and debris injuries, while theater owner Charles Ritter estimated losses between 2000 and 4000 dollars.

Miss Chrissie Smith Funeral at St James Chapel

Funeral services for Miss Chrissie Smith were held yesterday morning from St James Chapel Ocean Avenue led by Rev Dr Paul A Birdsall. Miss Smith was a worker at St James Chapel and was buried in Philadelphia. Atlantic guests of His Company attended.
