Lightning Sparks Barn Fire Threatening Homes
A lightning storm last night set a two story frame barn owned by George McKillip on Deanport Avenue ablaze, with two tons of hay and farming equipment inside. A dog baying saved the McKillip family, who woke before the flames reached their residence as volunteers from Independent and Oceanic fire companies fought the blaze and freed about 175 chickens before they perished. Firefighters saved nearby homes though the barn and its contents burned. the origin was likely a lightning bolt. Separate flames erupted at an icehouse in Galilee owned by Garrett White, discovered around 8:30 pm and sighted by Captain Stewart Cook’s cook and William Presley of Oliver Byron Engine Co. as he traveled toward Sea Bright.
