Long Branch Elder John Van Nortwick Dies After Illness
John Van Nortwick a Long Branch resident for over thirty years died at 526 Bath avenue after paralysis struck him last Wednesday. A 77 year old former farmer and clerk, he was active in the First Reformed Church as an elder. Funeral at First Reformed Church Wednesday at 10:30 with Rev Blekkink and Rev Keator officiating. burial in Somerville, N J. He married Mary J Wilson in 1859 and left three daughters and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family noted his longtime service to the church and community.

Recorder Badeau handled a busy docket in Red Bank yesterday sentencing three defendants. Edward Johnson, 65, crippled, was held without bail for firing a revolver at Margaret Nepean. his bullet pierced the side of her house. James Cox, drunk and disorderly, drew 30 days in county jail. James Jordan, also colored, fought police when drunk and disorderly. Badeau fined him $10 and released him after a reprimand. The two later defendants were sent to Freehold.

Peter Casler, 75, a veteran vegetable route operator around Tinton Falls and Red Bank, died suddenly yesterday morning from heart trouble while reading in his home. Born March 15, 1836 in Oceanport, he spent 27 years in Cook County after moving West as a young man. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 PM at the Shrewsbury Presbyterian Church with interment in the church burying ground.
