104-Year-Old Oyster Eater Dies in Ocean Grove

Uncle John Butler, known across Ocean Grove for his oyster diet and moderation, died at 104 after a long life marked by diet quirks and occasional church attendance. Born in Tottenville, he remained sharp until the final days at his Abbott Avenue home.

Jury reform stance and local political clash in Monmouth

In Trenton on April 11 the dispute over jury reform centers on Monmouth County where Speaker Taylor travels. Taylor warns if the President visits Monmouth he will address his views publicly. Bitter End for Charles D Clayton in Freehold Jail

Charles D Clayton, convicted of first degree murder, killed himself in his Freehold jail cell using a potato knife. A note pinned to his cot expressed contempt for his wife and family and indicated he felt deserted by those who testified against him. Coroner’s inquest found death by self-inflicted throat cut with a knife in his own hands. The inquiry did not reveal how he obtained the weapon during confinement.

The Long Branch Clean-Up Club released its timetable for a district by district cleanup beginning Tuesday. Two Acquitted On Robbery Charge In Jersey Court

Arlington Knox and Ralph DeGenito, both colored, were acquitted by a jury of robbing John Crean of a diamond stickpin and $8 on December 26 at Long Branch. Co‑defendants Ferrara and Heath had pleaded guilty earlier, with Ferrara testifying implicating all four, while Knox and DeGenito claimed Heath framed them. Separately, Robert Quinn and Daniel Dougherty were acquitted of assault on James Kennedy at Freehold, and William Hanks was discharged after nolle prosequi on a disorderly house charge at Red Bank. Local ads target moving pictures, concerts, and sugar prices.

Auto collides with fire hydrant on Laird Street

A five passenger Hupmobile driven by a man swerved onto Ocean Avenue and struck a fire hydrant near the curb at Laird Street last night. The car overturned, front axle broken, steering gear damaged, and the occupants escaped injury. The wreck occurred about 10 o'clock and the car was towed to Andy's garage for temporary repair.
