Steamer Ontario beached after fire off Montauk Point

Twenty nine women and children were rescued from the burning steamer Ontario near Montauk Point by the tug Tasco from New London. The ship was beached while the captain and crew fought the flames. a note from Captain Bond aboard spoke of sticking to the ship as long as possible. The hold was flooded and the fire brought under control. Reports also include a long-form political notice from Long Branch candidates seeking votes for commissioner.
