An all night session was halted by Senate action cutting work at hour. Assembly defeated the trolley franchise bill 48 to 1, ending a dispute in Baton town that might have settled the issue.
Governor Fielder plans a special session on jury reform and a statewide campaign to push a jury commission law without a referendum. The House blocked plans to cede to a statewide vote on juries, and adjournment left many bills defeated or sent to the governor. Six strikers were shot in Auburn New York as police clashed with workers at the Columbian Rope Co. Taylor of Preston G. Taylor heads home after floods delay.
The Long Branch Chamber of Commerce asks Broadway property owners to attend a City Hall meeting at 8 PM on Friday April 21 1913 to discuss immediate improvements. The goal is to restore business lost to summer traffic and showcase a new Broadway with planned work in the next two months. A later meeting will address segments between the railroad tracks Oakwood avenue and Third avenue.
The Hollywood Hotel on Cedar Avenue has been leased for two years to Dungan Brothers of New York. A representative is at Hollywood preparing for opening in June with improvements planned before the season starts. The hotel, famed for garden parties and its location with connected cottages, sits ready for renewed activity. Entertainment at Middletown featured a Baptist chapel event by the church youth, followed by a social and refreshments with a silver collection taken.
Captains Charles Davis and Walt Havens of Belford move their pound nets Wednesday morning. Davis reports 10 shad 2 jacks 3 bushels of herrings and half a bushel of flounders. Havens reports 7 shad 3 jacks 3 bushels of herrings and a few flounders. Frank Wagner of Passaic, a former Belford pound net fisher, has returned and joins Havens.
Mr Pierson of Newark, the window shade man, has moved to 142 Third Avenue. He is a Royal Arcanum member in Irvington and frequents Long Branch. He attended Tuesday night’s council meeting at Fellows Hall. Ad highlights include Cocuzza millinery at 612 Broadway and a First Presbyterian Church bake sale on April 5 in the chapel from 2:30 to 5 PM.
A Garrett Hennessey pound boat with Captain George Smith and seven crew overturned in heavy surf near the Jersey shore. Three crew were saved, including Clarence Hennessey, Rocco Lorenzo, and Frank Grandlin, while two missing men, Captain Smith and an Italian, are feared dead. Rescue efforts saved one more man, and the remainder were treated for exposure and injuries.
A. F. Golden on Broadway advertises for painters as part of Jacob Steinbach's House Furnishing department. The store stresses extensive imported goods, low prices, and wide selection, inviting hotels and boarding houses to inspect and offering wholesale concessions for large orders.

Mrs. Ella Silvers Stults of Cranbury presided at Red Bank’s first annual meeting of the Woman s Foreign Missionary Society. Reports showed $2 624 34 raised district wide, with Twenty Christian Endeavor Societies and fourteen bands noted. A Korea address by Miss Anna S Darla highlighted program. Silver Bay conference planned. Asbury Park to host next April meeting.
Mrs. George C. Hankins of Cassville burned herself to death at home rather than be sent to an asylum. While her husband was at a nearby well, she poured kerosene on her clothing and ignited it. She died from the fire after her screams drew her husband, who could not save her. The report also notes Roy Parsons of New York buying the William Conrow farm at West Long Branch and changes of residence in Oakhurst and Long Branch.
A steno grapher was jailed in Ocean County today for a murder case that puzzled authorities for years. His wife allegedly warned him and talked with detectives about the brutal double crime that shocked Lakewood residents.
The Lakewood case of Mia Turner’s murder leads to the arrest of William Leehan in Fort Lee and the involvement of detective work and a Missouri mystery formerly tied to Pittsburgh Mrs Turner’s body was found in a Pine Needle Lane brush pile two days after the killing. Detectives say Leehan resisted, claimed innocence, and was brought to Newark bound for trial.
