Mayor Van Note Surprised on 70th Birthday

West Long Branch Mayor J. J. Van Note received a surprise 70th birthday visit from Wen Long Branch Chemical and Hose Co. members. Firefighters gathered after their drill, gave him an umbrella, and shared stories of his boyhood along the Manasquan River. The mayor thanked them as friends, with Victrola music and refreshments to follow. His children presented a jeweled watch fob earlier that day.

Masqueraders Visit Complete Surprise Event

Priest Objects To Sending Funds To Red Cross Society

Substitutes Considered in Jury Reform Battle

In Trenton on April 2 a substitute for two new jury reform bills was reported. The measure combines a jury commission with sheriffs drawing juries under Supreme Court supervision and includes a statewide referendum. Voters will cast yes for the preferred approach, selecting the measure with the most votes as law. Senator Davis proposed a similar jury commission bill without a referendum, leaving a heated fight ahead.

Patten Line Opens Spring Navigation With Heavy Freight

The Patten Line resumes navigation on the Shrewsbury river with the Little Silver the first vessel of 1913. The ship departed New York at 2 p.m. and reached Rockwell avenue dock amid strong freight traffic and steady passenger demand. The Little Silver has been overhauled and repainted, and the fleet is ready to operate once traffic warrants.

Orange Minister Buys Property Here In Long Branch

The Norwood avenue property once owned by former Councilman James Campbell changes hands to Rev. Frederick W. Shafer the Orange preacher who will reside there with his wife and child. Campbell plans to occupy Thecker house on Campbell avenue after completion while Mrs. Thecker moves to Providence Rhode Island. Shafer is expected to make improvements to his new home.

City Asked to Reimburse HUD Counsel Fees in Bridge Case

Mrs. Charles Emery of Park avenue seeks city payment of her counsel fees in a suit against the New York and Long Branch Railroad Co over the Park avenue bridge. Fees were $00. The request was refused at the commissioners’ morning meeting.

Red Bank Fire Destroys Schwartz and Manson Buildings

A two-building blaze on Monmouth Street Red Bank destroyed the Louis Schwartz store and Manson and Sons offices around 3 PM after being discovered at 2 45. Fire Chief John J Maney was injured by a falling ladder. Fire lines kept crowds back as damage spread from the rear to adjacent property.

Fire of incendiary origin destroyed a barn, cow house, hog pen, wagon shed, corn crib, and more on George H. Willett’s Port Monmouth area farm. A missing Polish worker is suspected. the Willett yacht’s sails and rigging burned though the vessel was not on the farm. Insurance losses exceed $2,000.

Couple to Wed at Colts Neck

Announcement of the marriage of Miss Eleanor V. Coon ey of Colts Neck and Thomas L. Little of Red Bank will take place Sunday afternoon April 20 at Colts Neck R C Church. The ceremony will be by Rev A B Quinlan. After the wedding they will reside in Red Bank. Little works as district sales manager for Monmouth county at the New York Telephone Co. Both are well known with many friends. Little is active in Relief Engine Co Red Bank and in the K of L Lodge and Holy Name Society.

Borough Fathers Talk Fire Engines

An adjourned Monmouth Beach Borough Council meeting heard Fire Committee reports on engine tests. Michael Burns said the Robinson engine tested at Ventnor City matched LaFrance, while Chief Charles Jones opposed the LaFrance. The committee member noted an earlier underwriter's test at New Rochelle that the LaFrance failed then earned acceptance after adjustments.

Boy Injured in Clubhouse Fall Amid Practice

A ten year old boy, James Lynch Jr, fell from the horizontal bars in the clubhouse on a practice night, striking his head and receiving a scalp wound. He walked to a doctor’s office and endured four stitches without anesthesia, missing school for several days as a result. He is a St James Parochial School student and Boy Scout member.
