Vessels Complete Arctic Mission In 120 Ships
A three month voyage through ice to the Arctic Circle concluded with more than 120 ships delivering 548000 tons of cargo for the DEW line. Most vessels were American, sailing from West and East Coast ports to support the United States funded 250 million dollar radar network. The operation faced 10 foot thick ice floes, with Lt. Thomas Arthur Irvine aboard Labrador reporting painfully slow progress as convoys pressed north.
