A explosion hit the tanker Ticonderoga Sunday afternoon causing a large hole amidships. Coast Guard and officials imposed a news blackout while investigators weigh internal blast or floating mine as the cause. No casualties reported. Captain William Dougan believed the ship struck a mine.
NORWALK Los Nietos three-month-old Virginia Martinez is in critical condition at Angeles General Hospital after three blows to the skull. Sheriff detectives say the infant was left in a crib, found on a couch 12 feet away, with bleeding from the mouth. The mother Annie Martinez 21 says she left the baby alone for about 15 minutes and returned to find the infant severely injured. Doctors suspect heavy object impact or a severe fall as possible causes.
In Breckenridge Colorado the Araaphoe National Forest fire near Arapahoe spread to 500 acres as 300 firefighters and 200 soldiers from Carlson prepared a final push. Smoke blanketed the town while up to a thousand cars clogged roads as spectators watched the blaze.
Panmunjom reports say U N command accuses a commission letter distributed to 22 600 unrepatriated prisoners of war of Beijing Red propaganda. An Indian spokesman denied bias while an Allied aide called it Chinese Communist propaganda. Commission insists the letter was a joint, nonpartisan effort and broadcast to prisoners.
Argentina and Mexico urged peaceful means for Korean unification as Philippine Secretary Elizalde warned the General Assembly that Southeast Asia remains the world’s hottest powder keg. President Rhee pressed for full unification, while Canada and Argentina ruled out force and U. N. intervention.
Four states Texas Arkansas Colorado and Louisiana set late season heat records on Sunday with temperatures reaching 100 plus in many cities Llano Texas hit 112 and Shreveport Louisiana registered 100 while Little Rock and Lajunta measured 98. Florida endured heavy rain from Hurricane Florence along with southeastern drenched towns Columbia South Carolina Savannah Georgia and Raleigh North Carolina reporting over six inches in 24 hours. Elsewhere mild highs and light rain appeared in the Pacific Northwest and along the Pacific coast while Cadillac Michigan saw 52 degrees.
Two refugees from Soviet Russia and a former American Communist testified before Senator McCarthy's subcommittee that an Army training manual titled Psychological and Cultural Traits in Soviet Siberia is biased in favor of Russian communism. Igor Bogolepov Vladimir Petrov and Louis Budenzt argued the 75 page book propagates misinformation and serves the Communist cause. The manual has been a flashpoint in McCarthy Army clashes.

New York actor Hugh Rennie, 50, known for Broadway performances, was found hanged in his Manhattan apartment Sunday night. Police reported the death appeared to be by his own action after notes indicating he was in a terrible mess and unable to go on.
A 39 year old New Yorker who had been committed last July after threatening Dr Reuben Solway at Fairfield State Hospital disappeared Saturday with his wife Evelyn. Police guarded Solway’s home in Westport while officers pursued Seymour Steinberg who had previously blamed Solway for his daughter Heide’s death. Steinberg’s wife was arrested in New York on a holding charge for other authorities and taken to Bellevue Hospital for processing as Connecticut authorities prepared to question her.
A 19 year old housewife, Mrs. Nola Bignell of 1959 Locust Ave, used a .25 caliber pistol to fire in the air and scatter four youths during a street brawl near her home. Wife of police officer Don Bignell, she had previously knocked a man from a car with a jab. The incident occurred near her residence on a rainy morning.
In the Pyrenees near Nyer a U.S. C-47 on a training flight from England to Spain crashed on a mountain top called Combeille. A search party from Olette found the wreckage and said the four crew members were burned to death. Fire consumed the wreckage and bodies.

Senator Joseph R. McCarthy and his fiancée Jean Kerr plan a prenuptial party tonight after rehearsals for their wedding on Tuesday at St Matthew's Cathedral. The bride, once an assistant to McCarthy, organizes bridal details as guests gather at the Tankersley ranch in Maryland with Barry Tankersley among the bridal party. William McCarthy will be best man with three bridesmaids and 13 ushers assisting the ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday conducted by Rev. William J. Awalt.
