U S and French officials begin formal talks in Washington on methods to curb communism in Indochina with aims to consult Viet Nam Laos and Cambodia. Discussions cover French plans to withdraw some divisions and U S aid for training local forces.
Ten Negro pupils reported for classes at Milford High School today while many white students stayed home in a segregation dispute. Dr George R Miller said a normal schedule was being carried out at the combined high and elementary school as 100 spectators observed orderly police presence and reduced bus attendance.
Pickets formed at the Pabst Brewing Co. plant in North Main Street and the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. plant in Van Nuys as Local 501 members protested alleged contract violations and sought higher wages. Police lined the sites to prevent violence. Schlitz offered 13 cents more per hour after talks with a federal conciliator. the union seeks 2774 cents more from a base of about 2.72 dollars. Local 501 business manager R. W. Tucker urged restraint by all workers.
