Ike Says Far East Received Almost Half for Fiscal 1956 Nonmilitary Foreign Aid
President Eisenhower disclosed Congress that for fiscal 1956 the United States earmarked nearly 21 percent of total foreign aid for nonmilitary purposes. Of 760.4 million in Far East nonmilitary aid, 72.64 million funded defense support, primarily benefiting South Korea, Nationalist China, and South Vietnam, with the rest channeled through the mutual security program as indirect aid. The six month report covers January through June 1956 and underscores defense-focused allocations.
