Exploding Tank Kills Officials in Bitburg Germany

A U.S. Air Force gasoline storage tank exploded in Bitburg causing the deaths of 25 officials from American, French and German ranks atop the tank during inspection. The 12,000 gallon Matador rocket fuel tank burst into flames reaching 1,000 feet, as fire crews fought to prevent spread. Names of the dead were not released.

El Toro Jet Crashes Into Sea Killing Pilot

A Navy jet from El Toro Marine Base Santa Ana crashed five miles east of Santa Catalina this morning during a routine training night with three other planes. A body was recovered by a fishing boat Hobby IT and moved to a Coast Guard cutter en route to the Naval Base. The El Toro spokesman confirmed the pilot’s death but withheld the name until next of kin are notified. The crash occurred at 9 45 am about 90 minutes after takeoff.

Long Beach Man Aims at Catalina Channel Record

A 31 year old Long Beach station employee Tom Park entered the sea at Funeral Bay at 4 08 am to swim the Catalina Channel toward the mainland. His trainer Jimmy Lishman and wife Kay accompanied him as observers said he completed the first 12 miles by 10 25 am and was going strong. Currents near the mainland could push him toward White's Point from Portuguese Bend.

Order Col Fleming Dismissed From Army

Lt Col Harry Fleming, first American Army officer court martialed for conduct as a prisoner of war, was sentenced to dismissal from the service. He forfeits all pay and allowances under the punishment by a one-man military court that convicted him of collaborating with the Communists while a POW in Korea. The court-martial of 11 colonels and lieutenant colonels deliberated for 12 hours before fixing the penalty, reassembling at 1 a.m. to deliver the verdict amid witnesses and fellow prisoners awaiting the decision. Fleming expressed relief at being out of prison and vowed to continue fighting to clear his name, thanking supporters and noting a box of letters for his wife.

Long Beach commuter says she would buy a car over bus

Peggy Smith a 28 year old Long Beach resident testified to the State Public Utilities Commission that replacing rail cars with buses on intra city routes would force her to buy an automobile.
