A displaced veteran sought a new Manhattan apartment by a fake engagement to his girlfriend. After misleading a manager and faking nuptials, the lie unraveled when the girlfriend refused to go along, yet she later decided to apply, noting the building’s allure. The man faced the lease deadline without his supposed fiancée.
Jurors heard details about fibers found in the rafts cabin after the explosion and how most fibers may have been scattered by the blast. Mrs. Mollie Casteel testified about Overell's drinks and social scene, while Dr. Eustaer Benjamin reported Overell died at the time of the dynamite blast due to a mechanical rupture.
Edmund Shery of Wilmington, a 29 year old loan office operator, pleaded guilty to two extortion counts in Superior Court. Investigating officers say he solicited loans from harbor area union members and threatened clients who were behind on payments.Judge Hight set bail at $5000 while allowing Shery to remain free. Ward Sullivan represents the defendant.
Dr. M John Rowe, medical director of Adelaide Orthopedic Clinic, spoke at a New York City conference with delegates from the American College of Surgeons. He stressed research and laboratories, and the need to advance orthopedic surgery to relieve and prevent deformities. En route to Warm Springs, he attended the meeting.
United Press report from Seattle states E A Brown a veteran pilot from Log Beach disappeared Sept 8 during a flight from Ellensburg to Renton in the Stampede Pass area of the Cascade Mountains. A search by officials covered the area today as crews tallied missing persons.
American Red Cross Pacific area manager Ramone Eaton reports delays in sending and receiving messages to hurricane zones due to communication breakdowns and dispersal of families. In Long Beach, 20 replies from relatives have been received, and 65 inquiries have been submitted through the Red Cross. No information yet on fatalities for Beach residents.

John D. O’Keefe of San Pedro was swindled out of $48 by a man who used the housing shortage to his advantage. The suspect, met at a shirt shop on Ocean Boulevard, provided a receipt and keys but the expected apartment did not exist. The con artist failed to keep a later appointment, leaving O’Keefe with no dwelling.
