Washington House subcommittee hearings reveal Calvin Coolidge High School report: principal Cedrick Reynolds cites about 20 Negro students last year with 60 white peers, noting 12 of 20 failed in two or more subjects. He contrasts school averages 110 overall, 82.5 for Negroes, citing learning ability tests and background factors.
Washington reports that AFL CIO President George Meany rejected an appeal by Capt. William V. Bradley of the International Longshoremen’s Association arguing no evidence shows the ILA cleansed itself of gangsterism to merit AFL CIO admission. Meany said the ILA did nothing to rectify past conditions and declined to refer the appeal to the federation’s executive council. Bradley offered claims of cleanup but provided no new proof.
In Chile, Tarapaca and Antofagasta provinces where 8,000 nitrate field workers have been on strike for three months, were placed under a State of siege. The government invoked martial law after clashes last Monday night left three workers dead and twelve policemen injured during arrests of three union leaders.
