Wilson says draft not needed for reserve program
Defense Secretary Wilson said the volunteer reserve program lacks manpower but he does not support a compulsory draft. He warned that if volunteers don’t pick up, an alternative method to induce enlistment could be used, possibly releasing two-year draftees after 21 months for reserve duty. He ruled out new legislation for direct drafting and noted the Pentagon is studying reducing wings while increasing planes per wing.
